Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

This truck is a very smooth ride, has plenty of power and is very comfortable on long trips. Visibility is great, you can see all around very well. The truck handles well at higher speeds when changing lanes and can be thrown around at lower speeds without feeling like your going to roll it over. The main thing wrong with this truck (mine anyway) is that at around 70 mph the front end seems to lift up and it loses stability and steering feel. A windy day and getting around some tractor trailers will make you have to really pay attention to what its doing. Strangely putting on more speed seems to improve this handleing defect. Seems to have a lot if wind noise coming off the outside mirrors.

The best off-road/on-road stock truck money can buy. The truck handles great on the highway where I average 20mpg. Every time I have taken it off- road on either a beach or a trail, I am amazed how well it preforms. The size of the truck for me is perfect; fitting all my "stuff" in frequent trips to and from college is a huge help. With Toyotas reliability the Tacoma is a great truck.

I have owned a 2002 Toyota Tacoma 4wd w/ the TRD Package. Its quick, reliable, built for abuse and equipt for luxary. No leather here but its not needed for its purpose. Great manufacturer of Vehicles. Seen a tach of a toyota hit 300,000Miles w/out major work Great Truck recomend for anyone who likes mid sized trucks. Also get the TRD package, was worth the extra cost -- DrewTwo

  • Tacoma 5-Speed SR5 - 2007 Toyota Tacoma

This is the first pickup Ive owned and I generally have high marks. I imagine its as capable as any other in its class, and IMO it rides extremely comfortably. One major disappointment is the chintziness inside. My gearshift knob swims in place, while the gearshift itself shimmies endlessly in the front gears (1-3-5). Theres also a cheap plastic compartment next to the steering column that doesnt shut properly (and Ive never used it). Ive also been disappointed by the fuel efficiency. While it reports 23/28, I have yet to get anywhere close to 20 mpg from a tank. From a drive standpoint, the manual 5-speed seems essential for responsive on hills, turns, tough on-ramps, etc.

We’ve owned GM, Ford, Chrysler, Mazda, Honda, VW and Toyotas. Honda was Excl but cant beat a Toyota. Owned Trucks and Corollas. Now have a 94 Corolla Wagon, 2000 Tacoma SR5 and a 2004 SR5 Tacoma Double cab. Toyota wins, fuel economy, dependability, Reliability, performance, workmanship, and looks. ALL CARS DEPRECIATE a lot faster than any Toyota. Toyotas appear to hold their more than any other. Toyotas and Lexus are our ist choice and may consider an Acura or Honda as our 2nd. I do not work for Toyota but their product is so good that I wish I owned the company.

  • Not very satisfied - 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Overall probably the best truck in its class but for a $30K truck I would expect more standard features such as an illuminated glove box, illuminated console, illuminated sun visor mirrors, cargo bed light (the Tundra has it), heated mirrors, outside temp. and compass display (only available on sport or off road models). The transmission is extremely shifty and in my opinion rough. It often feels like I got rear ended when coming to a stop. My 2004 Jeep with 180K miles shifted much more smoothly. The stock stereo system is absolutely terrible. Virtually no highs, muffled lows and no midrange adjustment. Stereo in my 2000 4 Runner is 5 times better. Again, I would expect more at this pricepoint.

The truck fit and finish are awesome. Nice interior and easy to read displays. Cant seem to get my iphone 6 to stay integrated with texting application (have set it up each trip). Heated seats are cozy, and generally, the ride is good. Ive also experienced the poor engine/6-speed auto-transmission power. Truck doesnt do well in mountains or in traffic. Theres a significant power dead spot at 30mph, where the transmission seems to be in 5th gear (of 6) and engine at only 1,000 rpm, so no power to maneuver in traffic. Its not a sports car, but a Toyota software update on shift points is needed, IMHO. Ive found using the manually controlling the -speed automatic transmission is a workaround. Overall, a great truck. It just needs a fix to address the lack of power.

  • Great Truck - Worth the Price - 2008 Toyota Tacoma

I looked at this and the Frontier. While the Frontier would have been a good 3k cheaper, I like the Tacoma much more. There is nothing not to like. Drives like an SUV but I have a truck bed. Perfect combination.

  • Poor Quality Toyota Tacoma - 2007 Toyota Tacoma

I have the truck for about 1500 miles. It has following problems: 1.) poor alignment: I have to re-align front wheels to drive straight. 2.) power steel failed with fluid leaked out. It has to be serviced and part changed. 3). rattle noise from right side of cab. It has not being fixed after two trips to dealership.

My 3rd Toyota trk 1st Tacoma, 84 4 cyl. reg cab 4 speed was ok, 91 4 cyl reg cab 5 speed showed big improvements made, 04 4 cyl xtracab 5 speed subtle improvements. Xtracab forces bucket seats, not my favorite feature.Got better mileage w/91, the 04 is more enjoyable to drive after I installed cruise control, like Id done on my 91.Not perfect but definitely a keeper for some time to come.
