Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

  • Awesome truck...but.... - 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Overall, this Tacoma has been very good and useful for us. However, that being said, if you have the means and are looking for an AUTO trans Taco, I would suggest getting the V6 instead. I currently own an 07 Double-cab long bed Prerunner and average about 21mpg (our local gas is a 10% ethanol blend). With the inline 4, I was only averaging about 22mpg so the fuel economy savings with the 4 is very slim. The V6 also idles softer/smoother (as is the case with most V6s vs larger displacement 4s). Also, occasionally during cold starts the inline 4 seemed to idle quite high and noisily for about half a minute before settling down (others have posted reviews about this as well).

  • Tacoma experience thus far...... - 2001 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

My Toyota Tacoma is just over 4 years old. I only have 32,000 miles on it so far but the experience has been a good one. I live in the sticks in Northern NH and spend a lot of time on logging roads so many of the 32K miles have been hard ones. The only minor problem Ive experienced thus far is that my e- brakes recently locked up. Im also a little dissapointed in the gas mileage for a 4 cylinder (only getting about 17 mpg in town and 21 mpg on the highway). However, so far the truck is completely reliable and has lived up to my expectations regarding Toyota quality. I use my truck in all conditions to haul wood, to trailer my snowmachine, to trailer my 4-wheeler and it runs great!

  • I want my 97 Taco back! - 2007 Toyota Tacoma

I *hate* this truck. My 97 Taco got better mileage. I have an up/down hilly commute of 7 1/2 miles per day, each way. I hypermile by coasting down hills, and still, the best I can eke out is 24 mpg. They took the same spec. 4 cyl. engine from the 97 Taco and put it into the huge, bulky body of the 2007 access cab. This thing labors up the slightest of inclines. I dont need a "full size pickup" to compensate for something else. The smaller truck was fine for going to Home Depot or the transfer station. My manhood was not threatened, yet for some reason, it seems that Toyotas masculinity was somehow called into question. I want my old truck back!

  • Great Entry Level Truck - 2006 Toyota Tacoma

I was looking for an inexpensive work type truck. They DONT exist anymore. I bought a Tacoma after eliminating the Ranger (side facing jump seats) and the Frontier (bigger cab but too much$$). I didnt want, or need, bells and whistles. I got a great truck with am/fm/cd, automatic, bed line, seating for 3 at a great value and with what looks like the best ability to hold value after driving off the lot. The cab is spacious, the color is great (got the Indigo Ink Pearl). My wife and girls love the color, my guy friends love the bed liner, the tie downs, the cool styling. I have never owned a Toyota but will likely own more as the dealer sent someone 135 miles for the color I wanted!!!

  • I Love it ! - 2005 Toyota Tacoma

this is my first Tacoma truck, and second toyota vehicle after my 2004 Sienna. Im getting 19-20 mileage (Hwy) on my truck which i expect from a toyota.Exterior and Interior designs are really fantastic. High ride, really good control and fast pick up. My wife who hates trucks loves this, that says all.

Great all around vehicle, never had a single problem mechanically and absolutely wonderful to drive.

  • Good Reliable Truck - 2007 Toyota Tacoma

I bought this truck brand new over two years ago and I drive it for work every day. The Composite bed is a great feature as well as the power outlet in the bed. I didnt have a generator and it powered some basic items in my house for a couple days after a recent storm. The factory tires ride a little rough but have pretty good reliability. The stereo could be a little better. I love the design on the interior and exterior. Gas mileage is great. I usually average around 21-22 miles per gallon. Towing is ok but my 16 ski boat dogs it down a little. Unfortunately the bed dents easily like my last Tacoma. The front bumper should be chrome instead of plastic as well.

this was an economical buy. it gets me to work, kids to school, and good gas mileage. It seems like it is a solidly built truck and is definately holding its value so far this year.

In the small pickup category the base model Toyota Tacoma cant be beat. Reliability is 100%. Ive had no trouble @ all. I live in the Nort East & over the winter made several trips throuout Northern New England & Quebec during a Winter of record cold & snowfall & never once had any problems (pretty remarkable for a 2Wheel Drive ). I do however recommend weight in the back (I used sandtubes) & SNOW!!! tires on all 4 tires. Im looking forward to many, many miles & years with this base model Toyota Tacoma
