Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

Highly recommended. After owning 3 Chevrolets, a Nissan, and a Mitsubishi, I can say that the Toyota takes the cake. This truck is meant to be a truck. It doesnt have all the frilly features you will find on other brands, but you wont need them, trust me. You are buying a truck. The ride is sturdy, noise kept to a minimum, the seats are comfortable and both front and rear seats have ample leg and headroom. If you are considering a pickup, Tacoma will satisfy your needs even if you are hunting a full-size. I wouldnt recommend it for towing anything over 5,000 lbs, though. It can handle the PULL, its the stopping that becomes tough. This is my first non 4x4, and I can say so far so good.

So far I have been pleased with the truck. Shifting can be a little quirky at times but nothing major. Ride is nice and has plenty of power for me. Gas milage has been better than expected. Getting 21-22 for commute with up to 26 if I dont hit a bunch of lights. Cant wait to get it out on some trails to see how itdoes.

  • It meets my needs. - 2001 Toyota Tacoma

I am very happy with my pre-runner. It has been flawless in the 10K I have owned it. Actually Im not a big off road person, but I have hauled some big items with this truck, and for my small needs the truck is perfect. Good gas milage, low maintenance, and a great value for many years. It also hauls the kids and equipment fine. Then Ill give it to my son and buy another.

  • 2nd update after 9 months of ownership - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Cannot wait to get rid of this 2016 Tacoma when the lease expires. What a dog. New updates - 1. mileage dropped to 10 mpg when towing; 2. NAV screen goes black at least 1x per day and resets itself; and 3. wind howling noise driver side front window. And off course still the same old lack of responsiveness of the engine-- normally runs at less than 2000 rpm and you have to push accelerator pedal more than 1/2 down before it responds creating a very dangerous condition in traffic. Cmon man.

  • Great Truck - 2007 Toyota Tacoma

I purchased this vehicle for hauling mountain bikes, light yard work, camping and the occasional light towing job. Thus far, I have not been disappointed. Everything is well laid out and the storage is awesome. Plenty of power to enter Houston freeways with ease or tackle any jeep road. Purchase the sound shield and paint shield. Paint seems a little thin and scratches easily but hey, its a truck! Highly recommended. Serves my purposes and then some.

  • Very nice truck - 2005 Toyota Tacoma

My first toyota, and probably not my last. Quiet and smooth on the highway, compared to my old Silverado LT Z71. Ample acceleration, fuel economy isnt as advertised, but whos is?

  • The best 4WD Truck I ever owned! - 2007 Toyota Tacoma

I looked around a lot before I bought my Tacoma. I had Chevys and GMCs, too! I had three Dodges. This is the best overall truck I have ever owned. The pickup of the v6 is great. My fuel economy is getting better (18.5) as of 1,000 mile mark. The quality of the paint, interior, all around looks is overwhelming compared to some other car company models. This Tacoma is nice to drive and comfortable too! It just looks good. Indigo Ink Blue! 6 CDs in radio is great. The sound of the radio is real quality.

  • Second Taco - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Having owned a 2012 Tacoma, I enjoy the 2016 so much more. I waited 3 months to get it, and it was worth the wait. I have no complaints except the funky transmission programming that seems to default to a lower gear at the slightest of inclines or headwind. I have noticed that it doesnt (or need to) downshift nearly as much if you dont use cruise control under those conditions. The truck moves when you put your foot on it, and it doesnt sound strained doing so. Im optimistic Toyota comes out with some improved transmission programming soon. Overall, I find it comfortable, and I enjoy the upgraded JBL system. The Taco looks awesome, and I dont see one like it at every street corner like the Big 3s trucks. Other than the tranny programming, I love it!

  • My First New Vehicle - 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Waited 44 years to get my 1st new vehicle & after driving a 93 Reg Cab 4x4 the last 5 years... couldnt have made a better choice. 19/23 mpg lol, I averaged 25.2 MPG the 1st 2 tanks of gas (87 octane). Im 6-1, 210# and I cant believe the interior room. Only gripe I have is if I put my left elbow on the door rest to "push myself up" in the seat, it collapses & dimples in, very cheaply made. Not crazy about the Dun-rock tires (old tire salesman). A set of Michelins or Bridgestone Alenzas woulda been nice for the full size truck price I paid. Other than that, I love this truck and have NO regrets.
