This Year's Model Updates:

The 1999 Toyota Tacoma gets new front seat belt pre-tensioners and force limiters. Optional on Xtra Cab models is an AM/FM four-speaker CD audio system while 4x4s get 15-by-7-inch steel wheels. The PreRunner adds a regular cab option to its model mix. Natural White, Imperial Jade Mica and Horizon Blue Metallic replace White, Copper Canyon Mica, Evergreen Pearl and Cool Steel Metallic as color options.

Pros:
Cons:
  • Like most Toyotas, the price rises quickly once you start adding options that most truck buyers would require on even a basic truck.

Vrreeeeep!!! Thats the sound it makes with a supercharger!! Truck is a blast to drive. I had to retard the timing a little for the supercharger (TRD says you dont need to, but you do to avoid pinging). Anyway, the truck has more punch than anything Ive driven. I can outrun any truck on the road and still maintain better average gas mileage. Ive put 17000 miles on it since I bought it and I have no complaints. GET ONE!!!! Supercharge it!!

Bought the truck this weekend with 67,000 miles on it and absoutely love it, Ive owned a Chevy S10 and a Nissan Hardbody and so far this is what Ive been searching for. A small truck with lots of power with high ground clearance and good looks.

I purchased this truck with 32k odo and now have 106k. One water pump and normal maintenance is all. The mechanic at dealership wanted to buy on the spot when changing timing belt. I cannot part with this truck. Overall, 20 - 21 mpg combined (v6, 4wd, x-cab). AC is excellent (Tx resident). V6 has plenty of power. Towing is good as long as you use draw tight hitch - towed over 5500 short distance with no problem.

I like the ride quality and the reliability, but the seats are horrible! If you buy this truck and plan on going on those long trips then I recommend that you purchase some new seats. "back pain, big time!" all of the other tacoma owners that i know say the same thing

This is one exceptional vehicle. Fuel economy is one minor drawback (17 mpg), but the rest of the pluses outweigh the slight fuel economy problem. Anyone who gets a higher number must have 60 lbs. of air in the tires and driving with a 75 mph tailwind. My truck is almost 10 yrs old and I still feel confident to drive it cross-country and back again. I honestly feel this truck will last forever.

this truck is perfect for 1 or 2 people. stiff ride but didnt want a caddy. torquey 2.7L and 25MPG!! interior a little tight for 62", but seats very comfy.

Just got out of a lemon Focus (read donewithford) review for 2000 ZX3. I bought my 99 TRD with 69K on it. This is a TRUCK! Not some wimpy little high brow SUV with mickey mouse rear axles. Love the lockers, the motor, shift in the fly, and the looks of this truck. Like how it hunkers down when ya slam it in 4low. Maintenance is simple on this truck. Oil filter easily accessible through wheel well, even with big arms. Truck is sharp. I am definitely a Yota for lifer now.

  • A Great truck to own, wish I could buy another. - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

I bought my truck new in 1999. I ran 2 crank cases of 10w-30 Castrol regular motor oil. After that, I have used 10w-30 Castrol synthetic motor oil ever since. I change oil about every 5000 miles. I have had to replace the electronics to repair a left turn signal issue that cost about $500.00. I have had to replace the power steering pump, twice as the first one was a rebuild and under warranty. I have had to replace the battery once and also the catalytic convert (about $1000.00). I still have the original clutch and have replaced the front brakes and rotors one time. My truck now has 456,5000+ miles on it. I would drive it to across the US with no worries. It has been a great truck.
