Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

  • Best truck money can buy - 2001 Toyota Tacoma

I have drove tacomas all my life and this is the best to date. I do a lot of 4 wheelin and this truck will beat any jeep. I never have to worry about anything mechanical, ever. This truck is solid. I have big tires and a lift and it still runs strong at 103,000 miles on the clock. I had a chevy truck that was a pile of junk at 100,000. You cant even compare the two. Toyota is in a league of its own. I plan on driving this truck for decades to come. Great truck.

  • Longtime Ford driver now in a Tacoma 4x4 - 2011 Toyota Tacoma

First, Ill say Ive driven Fords most my life and some imports. I tried the mini-SUV route and had a Ford Escape for 7 mos. I was in need of a truck, but not a full-size. The F150s are very nice and a natural choice for me but the Tacoma really has fit my needs. The build, detail and quality of this truck is very nice and very solid. I have the Off-Road pkg in Super White and it turns heads and gets lots of comments. I can see why Toyota has run most the other midsize/compact trucks out to pasture - I had a Ranger as my last truck and the Tacoma makes hit look completely out of date.

This truck has all the power you will need. The brakes are spongy and the clutch takes getting used to. Otherwise, this truck is typical Toyota quality.

  • First time dissapointment with Toyota - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Very underpowered. Trans continously shifts to keep rpms up. Took 1200 miles trip to Florida. In 20 to 25 mph headwind will not stay in high gear using criuse but runs at higher rpms. Constantly downshift in cruise even with very slight road incline. Would never pull a trailer on long trip. I am 69 an sadly this is most dissapointing vehicle I have ever purchased. Running the vehicle with the ETC button on gains you 1.5 to 2.5mpg. Using that mode, I got 24 mpg with the last two tanks of gas. Pulling a 14 foot, 2500 lbs travel trailer the Tacoma will barely go 65 mph on a freeway and gets 12mpg.

  • Top Quality - Awesome!!! - 2000 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I purchased the truck new in 2000. After 110,000 miles, I have not had any mechanical problems. The quality of finish is impeccable. I need a bigger truck, but am unwilling to depart from such a reliable and capable steed. You cannot go wrong with this Tacoma. If only all vehicles were made this well.

  • Great Truck - 2005 Toyota Tacoma

    Love everything about this truck.

  • Disappointed. First and last Toyota. :( - 2001 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Purchased at 18 sold at 19 years old. Toyota needs to learn a lot from these trucks. Underpowered gas hog comes to mind. Dash rattles and poor dealer service are the norm. Truck is overpriced and overated. Constant small "non toyota-like" problems occur. Water gets in lamps and windows. Fix your mistakes Toyota.
