Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

  • Love it - 2004 Toyota Tacoma

I love my Tacoma, i think I have talked about 3 people into buying my truck. The thing is built well, barely have to do any maintenance on it. I got my truck with 23 miles on it, now it has about 117,000 miles. My baby has not let me down yet, it drives well in the snow, rain and basically loves going off roading from time to time. I would suggest my Tacoma to anyone.

I just purchased my Tacoma a couple weeks ago. It is a big change from my 1993 Tercel! What a truck! I had wanted one for quite some time, and coincidently, while I was really looking, I lucked out and got in on the Presidents Day 0.0% financing for three years. Like another reviewer had said, the truck is pretty stiff, but, man, is it fun to drive! The style is perfect. To some it up, I dont want another vehicle, ever.

  • Great Truck - 2007 Toyota Tacoma

I thought my wifes 2001 Acura TL was quick but the engine of this Tacoma is impressive when power is necessary. Very fast! Rides like a truck which I enjoy but is still very smooth and comfortable to travel. Decent room for passengers in the rear although a little tight if you have tall people up front. Very nice interior although Ive noticed a tendency to inadvertently push the steering wheel radio controls during turns. Overall a great looking and great performing truck.

[1] Ride quality - its not a crossover, dont compare the ride quality to one. My wife drives the MDX, and there is a significant difference in the ride quality when we swap vehicles. Its a little rough around the edges, but then I expected that from the truck. However, it is a very solid ride. [2] Power - its sufficient. Its not fast nor is it meant to be a road racer. [3] Noise - this is where the truck suffers a bit. I havent driven the previous generation Tacomas, but from what Ive read Toyota has made significant improvements to dampen the cabin. However, it is not good enough to use the bluetooth to talk on the phone while driving. Also, the engine noise is a bit annoying, but nothing that drives me crazy. [4] Rear passenger space - my family members arent very tall. Were actually quite short, so having 4 adults in the truck is not a problem. However, I can see taller adults having a bit of a difficult time finding a comfortable spot in the rear seats. Its not ideal for long road trips, especially in the back seats. [5] Gas - I am averaging 19 - 20 mpg in mixed driving. [6] Infotainment - The system is reliable and responsive and I have no complaints. [6] Tires - I have the TRD Off-Road trim and the OEM tires are ok, but I will not be replacing them with the same tires when these wear out. [Summary] The ratings that I gave for this truck was based on its comparison to other mid-sized trucks. I think it would be unfair to compare the ride to a SUV as I wouldnt compare the ride of a Camry to a luxury sedan. Update 3/2/17: Having owned the vehicle for about half a year and using it as my daily driver, I still really enjoy driving the truck. The transmission issue that so many people complain about has been an issue for me, but the updates that Toyota are coming out with are helping. The truck starts off in overdrive mode and constantly wants to upshift, so you can either get in the habit of using ECT power or just give it a little more gas. The seats that many complain about isnt too much of an issue for me. However, for long distance trips (3+ hours), I definitely feel more fatigue. I listen to Pandora almost exclusively and while the Entune system is just fine when it works, sometimes it just has an issue establishing a connection with the vehicle. I dont know if its my phone, the vehicle, or just the app itself, but it is a nuisance as I will experience this a few times a week.

  • Test drive a lot before you buy! - 2008 Toyota Tacoma

I just bought a 2008 crew cab trd tacoma. The TRD is very bouncy. I dont know if it is because of the TRD but it rides like a truck even though I have read reviews claiming that it rides like a car. It does not! I am also not impressed by the road/wind noise or the engine noise. I hope the bounce and noise settle down seeing that I only have 150 miles on it. Test drive the truck a lot before you buy!

  • Solid build and fun to Drive - 2002 Toyota Tacoma

After test driving several of the 4 door compact crew cabs, settled on the Toyota D-Cab. The V6 engine handles well and plenty of space in the rear seats. Has a very quite ride even at highway speeds.

  • Toyota can do no wrong. - 2009 Toyota Tacoma

Wow. This is Tacoma number three. First, Id like to say thank you Toyota! The one thing I said when the Tacoma came out in 2005 was I wanted Charcoal Gray! Well, that happened this year and I love it. I got a Magnetic Gray 4x4 V6 Double Cab SB TRD Off-Road. I love it! All the new features are so easy to use and work exceptionally well! I have my iPod hooked up to the JBL sound system, my phone linked to the bluetooth! In a truck!

  • Great truck! - 2004 Toyota Tacoma

I bought it new and drove it all over the Montana forest roads, then moved across the country to Miami, Solid feel on two track, mud and on the highway, the 4cly wasnt porsche-like at takeoff with a bed full of rocks but did just fine considering, Great MPG on the road. Seats are a little puritanical in their comfort level, but the ride is good. Overall this is a great small pickup, its not flashy or full of buttons and levers to break, just a solid pickup!

I kept it 6 weeks. It was all I could stand. The poorest design I have ever seen. You could not give me another one.
