Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

  • I love my Taco! - 2005 Toyota Tacoma

Got the Prerunner, Access, 4 cyl, manual. Ordered it. Great styling inside & out. This is my first Toyota & Im very impressed, tho I feel shafted by the dealer. The prerunner concept is great - the looks of 4WD w/o the cost. Only problem is the clutch pedal is killing my calf. The pedal throw is way too much - my heel hits the floorboard before the clutch is 1/2 way depressed so I have to point my toes to the extreme in order to shift. Shoulda got an automatic! The dealer cant tell me if the pedal is adjustable unless I bring it in. Got it for 1% over invoice but the dealer said I couldnt order VSC. Toyota should ditch the dealers and let people order straight from the factory!

I bought this vehicle in great shape. Lately, it has been shifting its automatic transmission too early and bogging the engine. Also, at idle it has a rattle now. It is only 6 months old. Not what I expect from a Toyota.

Within two weeks a puddle collected under the driver side carpets. This truck looks rugged but is built like a Coke can. Its basically a raised Corolla with 4 wheel drive. Chintsy interior - cheap plastic controls, door handles, center console and lousy sounding 6 spkr CD stereo. Being built in Fremont, CA is part of the downfall. They couldnt even include a lock on the gas lids. This truck is way too expensive with little real value.

The Pros: Great looking truck; comfortable ride; good navigation; good electronics; good gas mileage; great long term resale value; good choice for those who dont care; The Cons: Horrible fit and finish; windows rattle in the down position; horrible engine/transmission combination - this truck has no low end torque and its geared for gas mileage nothing else; even with the "turbo" button it goes from weird to weirder; I hated the engine and trans so much I got rid of my truck already after 7 months and 8000 miles. traded for $30k. I lost some money but could have been worse. I just couldnt handle it any more. The truck is a step up in technology but a definite step back in fit and finish and drivetrain. Also, truck had weird whistle noise at highway speeds which the dealer could not rectify. That alone was the icing on the cake. Toyota didnt do its homework with this one. I bought a Nissan Murano instead. Ill miss my truck but not the issues. Overall gas mileage was 18 city and maybe 21 on highway at 75 mph. So not bad but not as advertised either.

very good reliability, it feels a little cheap compared to american builders. 4 wheel drive system works very good. The body could be stronger and seats should have more support and comfort for us big guys.

  • great truck fun to drive - 2002 Toyota Tacoma

I have had my tacoma for a 2 year and what 2 year it has been. The tacoma is a great truck that I would recomend to anyone. Its TRD package is great when going off road, its v6 engine is very powerfull I have towed my 22 foot boat without a problem. It has good leg space in front as well in the rear. The differential lock is great when you ever need to get out of a muddy place. Its ground clearence is more than enough to go over a few step hills. Overall the tacoma is and extrodinary truck with its great engeneering and its Reliability is fanominal. The only downfall is its clock, make it a little more visable.

I bought this Tacoma used, but it was in great condition. I love driving it around town. 2.7L engine is peppy with the 5-speed. The highway is not a fun experience. Alot of rattles and shakes. NO RUST whatsoever. Perfect for off-roading. I would recommend it to anyone who just needs an around-the- town truck or weekend work truck.

2016 Tacoma TRD Sport is great! Truck is big but not oversized and can actually fit in the garage! Performs like a beast off road and decent fuel economy on the road. All quality Toyota parts!

  • Boy toy that doubles as family vehicle - 2003 Toyota Tacoma

Very well built truck. The pros in my opinion: super reliable, great built quality, very fun to drive, the look of 4x4 without the downsides (bad mileage, maintenance, insurance). A great poser 4x4 look/feel for yuppies wholl never leave concrete. I get up every day and enjoy driving this truck, its just fun to drive. Note: It also has a lot of room in the backseat compared to other extended cab full-size trucks. The cons: short wheel base makes for bouncy ride, its a smaller interior, and pretty spartan inside. Overall Im happy with this truck and it also works for throwing the kiddos in the back- seat.
