Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

  • Overall... decent! - 2009 Toyota Tacoma

This truck is amazing. I got the TRD Off Road package and it rides like a champ. With the upgraded Bilstein shocks and better tires than SR5 model, the truck rides amazingly. Although Ive only owned the truck for a very short time, Im sure Ill be owning this very truck for many, many years to come.

  • Huge disappointment - 2009 Toyota Tacoma

I have had my Tacoma for 6 months. I could not be more disappointed. I always thought that Toyota meant quality. It does not. I have had my truck back to the dealership eight times. Once for rattles and rear leaf spring problems. Once for rattles and the bad radio - waited 5 months to get that replaced. Five other times for rattles and squeaks in the doors and dash - still have not got those fixed. Speakers on the passenger side buzz. As soon as I an break even on the truck Im selling it and buying a Ford. Soft searching shifting at low speeds.

I would simply suggest anyone buying one pay particular attention to the automatic transmission. It is computer driven and you notice the transmission not engaging when it should after turns and when you start again say at a light and have not come to a complete stop. This could easily leave you in a vulnerable spot when you least expect it. Check Edmunds.com and read the complaints. Buyer beware as Toyota and the dealer will leave you high and dry with the phrase normal characteristic.

  • Great Truck Look / Actually Compact Car - 2009 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Downsized from Ram 1500. Big mistake. Could never get comfortable, was like sitting on 2x6 six inches off the ground. No interior storage space for tools, etc. as rear seat only folds down rather than seat portion folding up so very limited what can be carried in cab. Limited sight lines & blind spots even w/ rear seat head rest removed. Dont believe resell value propaganda - was hard to sell even at sharp discount w/ 6K miles. Hard to get in & out while working on farm. More car than truck.

  • Right size and performance - 2007 Toyota Tacoma

My 4th new Toyota, 2 were 4Runners and a Tundra. This vehicle is the right size and with the double cab and enough bed room for the weekend yard work, kayak, surfboard hauler etc., this truck is perfect. I went with the 4 wheel drive and TRD Sport package w/17 wheels and the ride is great! Everything compared it is hard to beat the quality and interior layout. Try to have everything from the factory re: running boards, roof rack, and not dealer installed if you can help it. I work with BMW and for cars they are 2nd to none, but for my off time this Tacoma is hard too beat!!

  • I Love My Little Truck - 1998 Toyota Tacoma

Great truck. I havent had one problem with the engine. In 4 years i have gotten in a few fender benders and broken windshield, but have not had to touch the engine. I get 23 MPG religiously. I have moved dirt bikes, furniture, and a piano!

  • better than before - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Had my 2016 TRD Sport (Inferno) for about a month now. Returning from the dealer with cruise set at 55 the onboard computer registered 27mpg. At first I thought this was too good to be true so I went to the gas station to refill and the numbers were right on. Since that time with mostly around town driving I am averaging 21.3. I traded a 2015 Tacoma TRD Sport in on this and it is quieter, faster and much more comfortable. They do tend to be priced higher but I am hoping the resale value remains high as before. I love this truck.

  • Top Notch - 2007 Toyota Tacoma

I was looking at the Frontier and the Tacoma. I decided on the Tacoma because of the superior space in the rear seat and Toyotas responsible tradition of workmanship and durability. Not sure if it matters but the battery is huge. I have a double cab short box SR5 Off Road Package and there is plenty of room for adults in the rear seat. As for the problem mentioned by the Editors of this site regarding the low seats, it took my lower back 2 weeks to get used to it but now I love it, all good things take some getting used to. The truck handles great off-road, better than I imagined. This truck is a small tank! It handles curbs at 30-40mph no problem ! oops!

I have a lot of fun going off road. It performs really good. On the road the ride is good but not the best it bounce a little too much. You cant fit an adult in the back (I have an extended cab). The passenger air bag is rattling like a snake and the clock is in the worst position that they could placed it, you cant see it because the steering wheel cover it. I think that the gas pedal and the brake pedal are too close, I sometimes when breaking accelerate at the same time when I am wearing my work boots. The power is there I have no complaints when I haul the trailer or when I have the bed full of stuff.
