Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

  • Great Truck - 2006 Toyota Tacoma

This is a truly great vehicle. Toyota makes great quality vehicles that you can trust. The only space for improvement is in the area of fuel economy. It is a little rough around the edges but will do. No real complaints with this truck. Highly recommended! :)

  • Love my Taco - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

I love everything about this truck except for the fuel consumption. I feel in this day and age Toyota could have squeeze a couple more miles out of each gallon of fuel used. Having said that, theres no other truck out there that I could place my trust in like I do in the Tacoma.

  • frustratingly sluggish on highway - 2017 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I wanted Toyota reliability and quality and the offroad capabilities. Tacoma seemed like everything I wanted. but my daily commute on the highway is very frustrating. its severely underpowered and difficult to keep steady speed as transmission is shifting gears constantly. acceleration is poor and even other cheap low end cars pass this truck all the time. I have to floor it to climb even the slight uphill. its really a bad driving experience.

  • Trans. Rattle - 2007 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Bought the reg. cab 4x4 for utility and reliability. The truck has lived up to my expectation except for the 5 spd manual trans. The trans. has rattled when in neutral since day one. Rattle is tolerable except when A/C compressor is running. Had dealer inspect, but they claim it is normal. If I wanted a truck that rattled I would have saved some money and not bought new. I would not buy this truck again do to this problem. If you are going to buy a Tacoma dont get the 5 spd. I havent heard anything about the 6spd or auto. There is no point in spending extra money for a Toyota if they are going to build them like Fords in California.

Truck looks great and runs even better...solid, tough, no-nonsense...i recommend a no frills, bells or whistles model, with a manual transmission and four-wheel drive...i use mine to drive up mountains and across deserts...have fun

  • S-Runner Tacoma - 2003 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

The S-Runner is a truck that is difficult to acquire. It took me almost a year to finally get mine. Speaking with other S-Runner owners on- line, theyve had similar experiences. This truck is a real blast to drive, with its 190 horsepower 24 valve V-6. Front and rear sway bars, Tekico gas shocks, and 5-spead transmission, make this truck a "real sleeper". Fuel mileage isnt bad for all the performance one gets in this S-Runner package. I personally have gotten 26 mpg on a trip. The reliability is typical Toyota, and thats a good thing. I am very happy with this truck.

  • Sorely disappointed in the new TAcoma - 2016 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

My wife and I were in the market for a new truck to replace an aging and old 3/4 ton Dodge we no longer needed. We test drove a 3rd gen Tacoma at the local dealership, which after a 20 mile trip decided the truck would be a pretty good replacement for us empty nesters. Good mpg, reliability etc.. Totally drank the Kool Aid. We ordered our TRD-OR 4 dr lb and waited 4 months for it to arrive. We took our first trip- a camping trip that took us over the divide to south western Montana. Not a ton of gear- lightly loaded I would say. We were SHOCKED that to climb the grade the tranny dropped to 4the and 3rd gear, and it redlined the entire uphill climb! Our 100 mile trip to the campsite returned a whopping 16mpg. Stock truck, mostly highway and then 10 offroad. My offroad mpg was better then the highway. That should have been a sign. Then the tranny starting shifting erratically, up-down, up-down.. It would never hold a gear. Took it to the dealer to perform the TSB update on the tranny- service department at first said "No TSB exists". I had to do an internet search and show it to them. TSB flash fixed it for about 500 miles, then it reverted back to erratic shifting. Also- dealer said mpgs "Will get better after 2,000 miles or so".. Third problem- the hood support braces are glued to the hood. 75% of the glue points failed, and my truck had a wavy hood at highway speed. If the sun glint was just right, it was like having a disco ball in the cab. Very annoying. Fourth problem- after 6 months and 14,000 miles the truck differential started howling and moaning. At this point the avg MPG was 16 (yes- 16), even after a long highway trip from Montana to Ohio. The dealer refused to address the hood- they said "Normal Characteristic of the truck", my tranny still shifted erratically and the car was unsuited for long distance travel. We had it. We drove over to the Chevy dealer, test drove a 1500 Silverado with a 6.2L V8 and 8spd tranny and got a decent trade on the Tacoma. No shifting issues, no wavy hood, no groaning differential and Im getting 19mpg on average. Toyota really duffed this Tacoma. Not worth the hype, the price or the hassle.

  • Wasnt worth the wait - 2005 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Ordered mine took 9 weeks to get-sport model with 17" tires. Website said locking differential-according to dealer after I received -not available on long bed. Truck is way overrated as far as what it will do--quality of build is good but has had its share of warranty problems-three times to dealer so far for rattles-tough to keep 17 inchers balanced. Sport interior is kinda plain for 30 grand-but so are most toyotas.
