Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

Needed 4wd and this was best available w/ options that I wanted. Use to tow 18 boat and general hauling. Good power.

  • A head turner - 2005 Toyota Tacoma

When new, the truck got more than its share of attention. Good mileage and great ride are pluses. Cargo capacity when camping or hunting cant be beat. Also has gone places 4X4s wouldnt go. Air conditioner has been only problem with radiator and now A/C clutch needing to be changed.

  • I love this truck - 2001 Toyota Tacoma

I have used this truck extensively offroad, mostly desert driving. Swapped stock shocks (I ruined them very quickly) for Bilsteins, huge difference. This truck performs extremely well offroad if not driven beyond its limits, yet still maintains a quality ride on-road for a 4x4. The only problem Ive had is the cruise control stopped working around 40,000 miles. I have also used it since new as a tow vehicle for a desert race car and even though beyond capacity, am still impressed with how well it tows. The rear leaves are starting to sag, but only because of overloading. I plan to keep this truck forever. Toyota fan for life!

  • Great looking, fun to drive, and very reliable - 2012 Toyota Tacoma

I purchased my 12 Tacoma in December of 11 with the Sports upgrade package and ETune system. With 24k miles to date, I havent had even the slightest of issues and Ive put it through quite a bit. Blue Tooth hooks up to my iPhone in seconds. The stereo and sub are awesome. 4x4 cuts through mud and snow without hesitation. Gas mileage is average if you dont have a lead foot. Still enjoy driving it. Handles exceptionally well for a pick-up and acceleration is surprising. Everything feels tight and well placed for easy adjustments and/or after market additions. The bed liner is great and storage will surprise you. Ive had GMs all my life and I wont go back.

  • Good truck, but with problems - 2002 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

2002 Tacoma double cab is very practical and capable, but mine has been a disappointment. Ive had numerous problems with a rattling dashboard (10+ trips to the dealer and it still rattles). Also, I just had a fuel tank recall and had to get some sort of metal shielding installed. Water pump leaked and had to be replaced. Another large water leak into the cab from the engine cowl - this thing is in the shop yet again getting all the carpet and jute replaced. Its a great truck ... when its not in the shop. Based on my experiences over the past 1.5 years, I would not recommend this truck. Riddler

This is an awesome truck. The power is great. The TRD package comes with a rather stiff suspension which is great for off road but makes it a bit bumpy on the road. Overall this has been an awesome truck.

  • Domestic auto makers take note! - 2005 Toyota Tacoma

I have been a die hard Ford fan for nearly 20 years. My last vehicle was a 1999 Ford F150 supercab. I loved that truck until after a 100k miles it cost me approx. $5000. in repairs. I purchased a reman transmission and it failed me 2 times in approx. 3 weeks. I decided to purchase a 2005 Toyato Tacoma, because of the rave reviews! I am very pleased with the appearance of the truck, the room of the interior is much better than the Ford. The gas mileage is great, I have had the truck for almost a month now, and love looking down at the trip odometer when I have put 220 miles on a tank and still have 3/8 left, my ford would already need fuel. I believe that I could not of made a better choice!

  • The little engine that could - 2003 Toyota Tacoma

Well, I have to say that this little truck is great for its size. Off road and this little guy can do it ok. I wish it had about 10-15 more ponies, but you cant have everything right. For the money this truck is great. Its reliable and its gets me from A to B. I wish I had an extended cab for more room but I manage in this one. Regular maintenance is good and easy. There is a weird creak or rattle in the dash at times. Wish it had a higher resale. Overall, not a bad little workhorse.
