Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

Awesome truck! I previously owned a 2004 Chevy Silverado and went to the 2006 Toyota Tacoma TRD Off-Road, and have no complaints! The off road capabilities are amazing and with the 4.0 engine, you can do just about anything and go anywhere. This truck can do it all, from launch a boat to rough trails in the desert! in addition to off road the tacoma handles extremly well on surface streets. All around GREAT truck!

Purchased earlier this year but waited to see what issues cropped up before doing a review. Overall, I have been pleased. I have not experienced the transmission issues others have had (yet), but have run into a couple of minor problems. The radio tends to shut off automatically, or get stuck on a station and the buttons wont respond. Also, when I dont have the A/C fan running and the air button is set to recycle, it will switch to outside air randomly even though I dont have the selector set to heat or defrost. My only other complaint is the bed surface is so slick that groceries are strewn everywhere during the 3 mile drive home from the market.

  • truck is fine transmission if junk! - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

I was so happy to get my new truck and i love everything about the truck except the transmission. I literally cannot go 45mph. When i hit that speed the truck shifts into a gear that bogs the engine down to 1000rpm and then it downshifts when i try to keep the truck at 45mph so it jumps me past that speed. I cant keep a steady speed unless Im on the highway in the top gear. I had the TSB done to fix the hesitation going from P to D and it worked. I had the transmission fluid checked. I did everything that corporate toyota told me to do and it still bogs down driving down the street and continually shifts. The fix is already in the truck but they wont perform it. If you put the truck in ECT PWR mode then it runs great. If they take that program and make it the startup program then it would be fine. For now Im going to have to trade it in and get something else. It sucks because i like toyota or at least i used to.

  • Only one complaint - 2003 Toyota Tacoma

I like this truck, I like it a lot. If this truck does not last me for 15 years I will be surprised. Just traded in my 1990 Toyota for the 2003. Love the rear differential lock, love the improved console. Why on earth they couldnt move the damned clock is beyond me. Its the only weak link in the whole damned thing.

  • New Toy on Road - 2005 Toyota Tacoma

A woman whos never owned a truck before had little to compare her new toy with. Though she drove in many trucks and really disliked them. Most of them felt like a truck. Bouncy and uncomfortable. But the new 2005 Toyota Tacoma comfort is more like riding in a car. Could be because of the new suspension this year. The 4 wheel drive is automatic and that is a plus for us women. Had a guy from work check it out and he is impressed with the horsepower and the V6 4.0L engine. So this truck is a plus for men too. Cant wait until the engine is broke in to go playing. Check it out!!!

Nice truck, it has a lot of power, leveled, cold air kit, Flow master, goes like a rocket, third gear is the happy spot, youre in a truck that is a ball to drive. Hard to drive with maturity, just begs to light up Nissan, F150s and the ilk. Had to figure out how to grease the grease fittings on the u joints, okay other than you have to pull a little heat shield to get to one on the front propeller shaft (aka front drive line). Be gentle on the clutch, get on it and get off it, they made two clutches, , the L UK on mine was replaced on warranty at 30000 miles. So much power I think it just is too much for the clutch. The 06 used premium, I think it helps.

  • Disappointed with my Taco - 2007 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

Ill start by saying that Ive owned many Toyotas over the years and have been very satisfied with every one but this one. After 18k miles the engine began to knock loudly (piston wobble) and the tranny will kick after every stop (driveline lash). These traits all called "normal" by Toyota. These trucks do not represent the quality the brand has developed through the years. If you can live with a truck that makes a nasty knock at idle, shifts through the auto gearbox after a stop...only to thump you after finally finding first gear, chasing wheel balance due to the hub offset being whacked and always having steering wheel shimmy; this might be the truck for you.

  • Toyota at its best!!! - 2005 Toyota Tacoma

PreRunner 4dr Access Cab TRD Off Road, love the height of the vehicle. Great clearance, cabin space, wheels, engine. It seems like its a vehicle that will last for a very long time. Moved up from a GMC 98Jimmy and feel very happy with the change. My wife loves this new truck. I cant wait to accessorize it with all the toys for the bed and the cabin. Its a little bumpy though for the streets in Puerto Rico, although I think all pickups are (first pick-up). Got around 18mpg on my first tank, well see how it goes on.

  • No Problem - 1998 Toyota Tacoma

Hands down, this was the BEST truck I ever owned. I had 180,000 miles on it (with the original clutch) before I unfortunately lost my truck in an accident. The truck ran great, I easily would have gotten 250,000- 300,000 miles. It never let me down, not once. I had that thing up to 4 ft of snow, and it handled great. I had the SR5 V6 extended cab. Gas mileage was aprox. 22 mpg This truck easily beats any midsize truck any other manufacturer could make.
