Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

  • Comfort, most notably the front seats terrible - 2016 Toyota Tacoma

Truck has great performance if you drive with ETC activated, does not get the MPGs as advertised averages; averaging 16 MPG around town. Has already been to the service department for an annoying chirping sound cuased by the engine mounted high pressure fuel pump; replaced the pump and have same issue but has resolved itself with 18 k mi on it. Premium technolgy package with JBL is worth the cost. My overall impression of the truck is not good the steering feels vauge on center and is unresopnisive; toyota should have applied the tundras handling characteristics to the tacoma and it would be a home run. Overall i am not satisfied with a $37000 overpriced truck; terrible front seats my 08 Tundra was superior in comfort & handling. Cmon Toyota wake up Im sitting in some of the cheapest and poorly designed seats for comfort Ive ever sat in!!!!

I purchased this truck because I needed something to haul stuff for gardening, home improvements, etc. I was sick of putting things in the trunk of my car. I wanted a truck with good mileage and styling. I didnt want to pay a lot. This truck accomplished all of this. At 64" tall, it was also the most comfortable, compact truck I could find.

  • Built Like a Car, Rides Like a Truck - 2009 Toyota Tacoma

This vehicle is one incredible pile of junk. At less than 45 days following its build and less than 400 miles on the odometer heres the tally: underbody rust, rust and more rust; looks like the truck was built and then placed on the sea floor to cure; sloppy manufacturing permanently welded oxygen sensors into their threaded mounts; radio quit working; 4WD system engages only when it wants to -- not when you want it to; brakes soft as sponges; mystery rattle from right door pillar. This thing has a totally plastic (plastic!) box, Im not talking a steel bed lined with plastic, but plastic!

Replaced a 2001 Tacoma TRD. It was a great truck that was very dependable. If this Tacoma is 1/2 as good I will be very satisfied.

Great truck to drive and enjoy. Very good off-road and easy to drive. The Tacoma is a wonderful step up for Toyota.

  • MY 2001 TACOMA - 2004 Toyota Tacoma

I spoke to dealers and mechanics about this, and I all get is that they all do that, which I find that real b.s. Another thing, the rubber around my windows are much harder to keep clean for the first time in 30 years. I have been a Toyota owner since the 70s and never had that problem-ever.. I spoke to the dealers and the mechanics and all they tell me is that they have to be cleaned with soft scrub and use wax on it.... Since when was I told to use bathroom cleaner on my truck? I know that it is not under warranty-but I would love to hear from you-I can get that replaced for free....

  • 96% Happy - 2006 Toyota Tacoma

Lets start by saying that Im not partial to any truck brand, you name it, it doesnt matter. I do the research the best I can, if that research shows one or the other to be the better buy/quality then thats my truck. Who knows? I could spend all day listing what I like about this truck so I will stick to the bad. Year one I had three or four hard starts, dont know why but hasnt happened since. The brakes seem a little weak. I do own the biggest model Tacoma but they could still improve a bit. At 1-1/2yr, 43k miles the release strap on the passenger side back seat pulled out (very inconvenient). Still, problems are minimal.

  • Poor Suspension - 2006 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I got my SR5 4x4 access cab and loved it from day 1, and after a few months of driving and hitting a few little bumps on pavement & dirt roads (even while empty and just me driving) the rear end would bottom out and the suspension is less then standard. I couldnt be. that Toyota would allow only 2 leaf springs in the rear of any of their trucks. Otherwise the truck runs great & I think they have since upgraded this after 2006 - or at least I hope so. Everything else has been perfect.

  • 4x4 6 speed manual - 2006 Toyota Tacoma

I recently traded this truck in, but had it since 2007 when I bought it new. Never had to replace anything but the oil! It was the most reliable vehicle I have ever owned. Great off road, comfortable ride. The biggest downside was the fuel economy. It is very poor for a small truck! When I first bought it I didnt notice it as much but then when I moved and had to drive more the economy became very apparent. That was what made me trade it in because it was just too hard communiting 40 miles everyday.
