Model Overview:

Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.

Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

This is a follow up to my original posting after I purchased my Tacoma 4WD. I havent had any major problems with this truck. The only problem was my aux trans shifter popped out of position when taking out of 4WD at 45 mph. It was an easy fix as the retainer clip had loosened out of its clip holder. It was put back in and I havent had any problems with it since. Gas mileage has been as high as 24.7 and I average 19.5-21 mpg traveling the I-5 corridor through the Cascade mt range of Northern California. The comfort is still a problem over aggressive expansion joints or the rutty freeways of the entire Bay Area region! This truck has been great to me and I will trade up for a new one soon!!

I purchased this truck about a month ago, and am so impressed by it. It does everything I need to do, and more. If you are looking for a small truck, that sits like a 4x4, gets good gas mileage, and looks great, this is the one for you.

This is my 8th toyota truck. My first was a 1986. I love the double cab and the long bed. Enough room and power to take the family and pull the boat, plus load my HD in the bed. The quality is second to none. Great looks as well.

Traded a f-350 diesal 4X4 and love this truck not nearly as hard to park. I could really keep up with all my freinds in the dunns now. test drove the fx4 ranger but liked the toyota alot better. went off-roading with both of them before i bought and liked the performance and gas mileage better than ford. they need to offer a standard model in the 4-doors TRD.

  • Happy Overall - 2006 Toyota Tacoma

I purchased my truck (used) to replace a well-worn full size pickup. It was my hope to buy a smaller truck, and still enjoy the higher ride, spacious cabin, and load-carrying capacity of my old truck, but with better fuel economy. Im very satisfied on the first two points, but less so on the load-carrying and fuel economy. When this truck is loaded to capacity, the rear springs are almost bottomed out. And the fuel economy is only slightly better than a full size truck. Overall, though, Im quite happy. Its handling is stiff and glued to the road, like a sports car, but comfortable on long trips. And even for a tall person, the seating and controls are very satisfactory.

Its a quiet truck. The only grievance I have is the voice recognition...it frequently gets my requests wrong...far easier to attach my smart phone to the dash, and voice my requests. Navigation is frustrating. Who has time to pull over?

Bought a short bed double cab Sport 4x4 Tacoma as surprise gift for husbands 60th birthday two weeks ago. White. All the bells and whistles. Was he ever surprised, and he loves it!! We had looked at every pickup manufacturer on the lots and Toyota still rocks it best. Mud flaps should come standard but I added them the next week. Also added leather at purchase. Only thing Ive noticed is that I wish there was a little more front seat leg room for the passenger. And the nav system needs to be reprogrammed at the dealership: "Home" currently cant be set up. Also wish the XM stations, once preset, would display what the channel is, not juat the channel number. The hunting for gears thing referenced in other reviews has not occurred with us, but its mostly flat here or light hills. 700 miles and counting.

This Tacoma is the second toyota i have purchased new and i am definately addicted. I truly believe the Toyota Tacoma is one of, if not the most, reliable smaller class pick up truck on the road. Its looks far surpass any other make or model and the quality of its construction is superb. I do wish i had arm rests, but Its not a deciding factor.

  • Fantastic Truck - 2009 Toyota Tacoma

Traded in my 99 GMC half ton on the "Cash for Clunkers" for a double cab TRD Off-Road and never looked back. I have wanted this truck for a very long time and I am not disappointed. Front & rear seats are big enough for 4 full size men and is comfortable on long hauls. Compared to the old GMC, the engine ad breaks are fantastic (dont see what others are talking about??). My only complaint is no XM radio?? The locking rear differential is a must have with the 4x2. Towed my 5,000 boat with no problem (need trailer brakes). Would recommend to anyone looking for a mid- size truck.
