Toyota releases the Double Cab. A new StepSide version is available, and the S-Runner sport truck debuts. Revised front styling and new alloy wheels give the 2001 Toyota Tacoma a more rugged look. New exterior colors and option package content shuffling sum up the obvious changes for 2001.

Pros:
  • Powerful engine choices, attractive styling, competent off-road capabilities, crew-cab configuration.

  • I love this truck - 2001 Toyota Tacoma

I have used this truck extensively offroad, mostly desert driving. Swapped stock shocks (I ruined them very quickly) for Bilsteins, huge difference. This truck performs extremely well offroad if not driven beyond its limits, yet still maintains a quality ride on-road for a 4x4. The only problem Ive had is the cruise control stopped working around 40,000 miles. I have also used it since new as a tow vehicle for a desert race car and even though beyond capacity, am still impressed with how well it tows. The rear leaves are starting to sag, but only because of overloading. I plan to keep this truck forever. Toyota fan for life!

This is the first truck that Ive even owned and I love it. Father had a 87 with over 300K and I got tired of borrowing it. (excuse I gave the wife) Saw the 4 door and fell in love. Last one on the lot, test drove it, came back and asked where do I sign.

Update to a review written not long after I bought the truck. Now have almost 130K miles. Did the normal timing chain/water pump at around 90K, and have had all the scheduled maintenance performed. Only problem I thought was a design flaw was the front ball joints, which wore out at about 60K miles, due to poorly designed seals. Also replaced the stock muffler w/ a Flowmaster, and the stock air filter w/ a K&N cold air induction kit; that raised the mileage to about 19 mpg combined. I plan to drive this thing until the wheels fall off, then Im going to put em back on and drive it until they fall off again. If you want a solid truck for the long haul, look no further.

  • Class of its own - 2001 Toyota Tacoma

I drove mostly American made pickups while in high school. After driving one of these Toyota pickups, I will never own anything else. Its really a no brainer. Looks, performance and yes untouched reliability put it way above the rest. I have 135,000 miles on mine and no problems. Toyota will never have financial troubles when they make trucks like these! These trucks will be around for ever.

  • Think of it as an investment - 2001 Toyota Tacoma

This is the 2nd Tacoma Ive had. Im keeping this one as long as it keeps running. If you are looking for a small truck (S10, Frontier, Ranger, etc) do not make the mistake of buying anything but Toyota. Reliability and resale value do not even come close with the others. The first one I had I sold because it didnt have the xtracab. It had 34k on it and never one problem. The new one has 13k and is much nicer than the first (3-in-1 stereo is a great standard feature). The gas mileage is great and the ride is much better than the 97 I used to have.

This is my second Toyota truck. My first lasted 10 years and it was still going strong when I sold it. This new truck has all of the features that I wanted in my old one. I have already driven it to Alaska and down to the tip of Baja. I have the confidence that it will get me where I want to go.

I have had problems with the rubber between the plastic fenders and the body coming off. The dealer has fixed this twice, now with some new kind of glue.Other problems are, a rattle somewhere around the back seats?, the clock needs to be moved, the engine seems to cranks longer than it should after sitting for a while. Now for the biggie. The 4x4 shift lever is positioned so that my right knee is constantly resting on it. This is extremely annoying because of the vibration coming through it. This alone makes me want to get rid of the truck but I cannot find anything that I can trust for dependability but a Toyota.

  • 200,000 mile report (Automatic Trans) SR5 - 2001 Toyota Tacoma

Wanted to report that the Tacoma has reached the 200,000 mile marker. Normal maintenance so far: belts, timing belt, water pump, and cat converter. Oil changes performed at 3000 miles every 3000 miles. Truck runs great. Body and interior holding out great. I do take care to keep it clean and waxed. Dome light has failed (constantly burns them out) and one light for the fan switch has failed- I have not replaced. Miles are mostly highway and the truck has not been off-roaded. I hope to be able to write a 300,000 mile review. No rattles to date! Great truck so far. Couple of more years and maybe I will have gotten my monies worth outta it.
