Since its introduction in 1995, the Toyota Tacoma has been a mainstay of the compact and midsize pickup segments. The original Tacoma fell into the compact category, while the second-generation truck's 2005 debut marked the transition to midsize dimensions. Typical advantages to a new or used Tacoma include a variety of body styles to choose from, useful off-road abilities, strong resale value and a better than average reputation for reliability.
Downsides are few. Even when modestly appointed, this Toyota often costs more than competing trucks and prices are high on the used market as well. In addition, taller drivers might feel cramped inside the first-generation Tacoma's compact cab. Otherwise, the Toyota Tacoma is a very capable pickup that's highly recommended for nearly all truck shoppers.

Small gripes - 1999 Toyota Tacoma
By Whaleya - August 21 - 10:00 amI was thinking all all the things I dont like about this truck, and they were all minor. When Im worried about things like cupholder size and take for granted the engine, transmission, etc I have to admit Im nitpicking! My truck has 45,000 miles on it and has been in for repair.... well once something does break Ill tell you about it! (My 94 Grand Cherokee, on the other hand, is a money pit)

Great Truck - 2002 Toyota Tacoma
By CHIEFROCKER - August 21 - 10:00 amI just purchased the 2wd V6 double cab with TRD. I must say this truck is awesome. I have done extensive research on this truck before buying. I looked at all the other competitors and the Toyato is the best hands down. Unfortunately I have heard a few horror stoies about Leaks around the dash and passenger door. Hopefully I wont have those problems

Solid truck after 45k hard miles - 2002 Toyota Tacoma
By nbinsd - August 18 - 10:00 amI bought this truck new, 2002 4X4 TRD xtracab. 2 years and 45,000 miles later Ive got no complaints at all. All Ive done is oil changes and other minor dealer recommended maintenance. Tires are ready to be replaced and brakes are at about 50%. Fuel efficiency could be a better... i get about 17 avg.

By Jacob - August 15 - 1:02 pmMy grandpa bought me a Toyota Tacoma, the year of 2006 and its very reliable, it isnt comfortable in the backseats because I got extended cab ,but it works for me and another passenger, its incredible on gas mileage and Im blessed to have such a nice truck

Bad Radio - 2009 Toyota Tacoma
By Jim - August 13 - 6:10 pmThe radio in this truck turns on and off at will. The driver has no control. Toyota is aware of the problem and will fix it in a few months. I have been waiting two months with not a radio in site. The problem is so prevalent that the radios are back ordered to the factory. If you like radio you do not want to buy this truck.

Overall Satisfied - 2006 Toyota Tacoma

I am very picky, and point out at stop lights and in traffic at or below idle there is a slight shudder in the drive train. It happens when the AC is on. I feel it in a slow takeoff with my pedal foot. This happens at 1k idle or less. I am surprised over bumps you get feedback that I would have not expected, and its likely due to needing to dampen the shocks and springs in the rear. I guess they are doing this in anticipation of the payload, but it would be nice to have the option to set the drive style. Other than that, excellent HP for a 6 cyl and good highway experience.

Update - 2008 Toyota Tacoma
By Western Plainsman - August 4 - 9:53 amAfter 14,000 miles, the mileage @ 70 MPH is now up to 24 MPG. Thats satisfactory for a 4x4. Pickup is smooth and the bench seat okay on long trips. Dont care for the Dunlap tires; theyre smooth, but sure dont have the quality of Michelins. I added a factory cruise control and 2 factory D ring tie-downs to the front of the bed. This little rascal ought to come stock (or at least available) with intermittent wipers & cruise. It rides & handles just fine. For a basic 4x4 under 20 Grand pickup, I dont see how you can beat it. Tight, no rattles, easy to do maintenance, pretty dog-gone good ride. Im a bear to satisfy...and Id buy this one again in a second!
