This Year's Model Updates:

The 1999 Toyota Tacoma gets new front seat belt pre-tensioners and force limiters. Optional on Xtra Cab models is an AM/FM four-speaker CD audio system while 4x4s get 15-by-7-inch steel wheels. The PreRunner adds a regular cab option to its model mix. Natural White, Imperial Jade Mica and Horizon Blue Metallic replace White, Copper Canyon Mica, Evergreen Pearl and Cool Steel Metallic as color options.

Pros:
Cons:
  • Like most Toyotas, the price rises quickly once you start adding options that most truck buyers would require on even a basic truck.

  • Little beast of a truck - 1999 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

I have used this truck to pull a 2500 lb. trailer 100s of miles every weekend for the last 3 years. The only parts I have had to replace are the clutch, tires, ball joints and shocks. If I had not towed so much weight (probably more than the intended towing capacity) Im sure I would not have had to replace the clutch, ball joints or shocks. This thing has been one hell of a little beast for getting the job done. I have just replaced it for my towing purposes with a three quarter ton van. I sure couldnt have towed my trailer with any other manufacturers 4 cylinder mini truck. Toyota rules this market.

  • Great truck for the $ - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

I bought this baby brand new in 1999. This is a very powerful 2.4 lt 4 cyl engine. I used to tow a 20 Commander jet sky boat 3500 lbs from Corona, CA to the Colorado river and I was amazed at this great little truck pulling avility. It has over 80K miles and all I had to replace was tires and front brakes. What more can you ask for?

  • Your Best Bet - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

Yes, it does cost a little more but it is worth every penny. This truck has not let me down in any way. From build quality to MPG it is a winner. My father has an S-10 that was purchased at the same time in 1999 and his has been in the shop 5 times. My Taco has only seen the inside of a shop for routine maintenance. By the way, get the TRD package if you can find it. Better ride, better off-road, more options.

  • Soild truck - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

Great truck. Quiet on the highway, handles nicely. It may be 2wd but this thing flies through the dessert and off road. The locking read differential is great if you get stuck. Great daily driver. Very comfortable.

  • Unbreakable - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

This truck is absolutely indestructible. Ive tried to break it, but Ive come up short. I redline at least 5 times a day, I hop curbs and other onroad obstacles constantly, I offroad whenever possible, and I cruise at 85+ mph just to make it work. The truck refuses to die. This is my third tacoma and I was hoping the third time would be charm. Guess Ill have to invest in the old Silverado if I want to break something.

  • You cannot go wrong - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

I purchased this truck used with 34k. I now have 101k and other than tires, brakes, water pump and belts it has never let me down. Pay the dealership for timing belt replacement - crank pulley is too tight to loosen. Overall mileage for v6 4x4 5 spd is around 20-20.5 city and 22, maybe 23 on highway if you are less than 75 mph. Towing is good with receiver and 4wd is excellent. I have gotten stuck one time. I want an 07 Tacoma but I do not want to get rid of this one. Paint, interior is like new. Ride quality is so so for a 4wd with 31x10.50 tires. Reliabilty and fun factor is why I still have this truck.

  • Great Truck - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

I bought this truck used with 31k and currently have 99k - tires, water pump, frt, brakes and shocks/struts are all that I have in it. Power from v6 is good but thrashy at WOT, good gas mileage for 4x4 - 20 mpg, but I have gotten as good as 22 on highway at 65 mph for 3 hours. Interior is utilitarian but showing absolutely no wear, 5 spd is a little whiney in 1st and 2nd - no problem with power on highway - very rarely have to take it out of 5th to pass. Trailering is good provided you have draw tight hitch. Payload is one thing that concerns me - leaf springs seem to be fatigued even when not fully loaded weight wise - new shocks did not help - still rides well though -A/C works well in Tx heat,

The performance is awesome. Whenever I need that extra power, its always there. Ive never had a problem with it as far as reliability.

  • Most Reliable Truck Ive Ever Owned - 1999 Toyota Tacoma
    By -

This is the fifth truck Ive owned, and my second Toyota truck. The first was an 88 which ran reliably for 12 years. My 99 Taco has almost 80K miles on it and is still going strong. It travels 90 miles every day getting me to work and back plus it goes off-road in my free time to get me to some of my favorite canoeing and kayaking spots. Other than regular maintenance it has exhibited no mechanical problems and continues to perform flawlessly. Ive also pulled a 2200 lb camper up through the White Mountains with no problems. Only had to drop one gear pulling Franconia Notch.

  • Great Little Taco - 1999 Toyota Tacoma

I will have to say that Toyota did a fairly good job with this truck however they did cut corners in some places. One place that does need improvement would be the seats. Long trips or bumpy roads, I have a lot of back aches with this. Also the interior on some models were equipped with clocks and some without. Why a clock you say? Why not it looks cool and completes the look of just a blank black square. Upgrade you say, well yeah but for $80.00, come on I mean go to Wal-mart and buy a cheaper one and tape it over the black hole. Over all though good truck and excellent duribility.
