This Year's Model Updates:

Toyota's mini-SUV receives just a couple cosmetic changes this year. Models ordered with the Quick Order package now have gray-painted bumpers and overfenders, and Toyota has added color-keyed bumpers and overfenders to the "L" package. There are also three new L package colors: Rainforest Pearl, Spectra Blue Mica and Pearl White (Natural White and Vintage Gold have been discontinued).

Pros:
  • Steers and handles like a car, thoughtful cabin design, well-built interior.
Cons:
  • No V6 engine option, noisy, most desirable equipment is optional.

I love to drive my Rav4. Fortunately, having a manual transmission helps with giving me that extra pick up when I need it and it helps me get excellent gas mileage. My Rav4 averages between 25-30 MPG in mixed driving situations. The only issue I had was with a computer chip that, once corrected, has not given me any more trouble. Although at times I have considered getting a new car, Im having a hard time giving up a vehicle that has been so good to me. I wouldnt be surprised if its still running after 200,000 miles. It has 80,000 miles already and still feels like a new car.

At first, I was hesitant about the RAV 4 because of its exterior looks. However, after taking a test drive and reading about it in Consumer Reports, I fell in love with it immediately.

  • Rock and Roll, but Rattles and Shakes - 2002 Toyota RAV4

Great design in and out. Handles like a car with the advantage of sitting high. It puts a smile on my face. Great for around town and gas mileage is surprisingly good. I feel the king of the road (no more threatened by the size of monster SUVs). The inside is so roomy and practical yet so small and cute from the outside. Well this is for the “Rock and Roll” part… let’s talk about the “Rattles and Shakes”. Soon the rattling annoying noises crept up from somewhere in the back. The audio unit also buzz. It drives me crazy.I see that I’m not the only one complaining about it, so I’ll take an appointment with the dealer and raise hell if they do not fix it !

Ive had my RAV4 for 4 1/2 yrs. now and it has been one of the best cars that Ive owned in the past 35 yrs. Top qualities that I love: 1. Higher viewing position compared to a sedan 2. Short, compact with plenty of room inside 3.Comfortable seats, easy to reach radio, good drink holders, nice ride 4. 24-26 mpg mostly highway travel 5. Highly reliable car with almost no mechanical problems over the past 80,000 miles Cons: 1. Slippery in icy conditions 2. Body dings easily

  • Toyota has a winner with the new RAV4 - 2002 Toyota RAV4

I traded in a Jeep Grand Cherokee on this vehicle & I am happy with the additional interior room on the RAV4 as well as the performance. I use my RAV4 for commuting and mainly city driving. The RAV4 has more head room than the Jeep and is more nimble to park and to drive in traffic. Add to that approx. 24-29 MPG vs. the Jeeps 16-20 MPG and the fuel saving start to add up. I recommend this car for reliability, resale value, quality of the engine/transmission & for 1-2 passengers especially. Great vehicle.

I had this car for 6 years and overall it was a very good car. It was extremely reliable. I never made any large repairs. It was beginning to lose all the little parts (power windows, thing that holds the back door open etc.). I live on a class 4 road and have really rough winters to contend with. It is a little top heavy but it got me through some fairly rough storms and mud. My biggest complaint was comfort while driving but I am a very small person.

  • A big NO to Toyota again - 2002 Toyota RAV4

The car is ok apart from the check engine light that keeps coming on. Had the ECM reprogrammed but so far nothing has changed. I wonder if Toyota still stands by their product if they cant take the responsibility of acknowledging their mistakes. I will never buy a Toyota car again.

  • Compact, Economical, Great on Gas - 2002 Toyota RAV4

It helps the environment and my wallet to drive an SUV that utilizes fewer resources than most other compact SUV out there. The RAV4 is reliable, fuel efficient and economical to own (parts are fairly reasonable). I recommend this to anyone who cares about reliability, the environment and the price of gas today. Keep more cash in your wallet... drive a Toyota RAV4 people! Some may say it is not a cool car for guys to drive. I have heard it described as a "females" car. Well, if this is the case, then those "females" are some very smart people on this planet. They happened to stumble on a money saver!!
