  • NOT WHAT I EXPECTED FROM TOYOTA - 2004 Toyota Prius

WHEN I COMPARE THE HONDA VS THE TOYOTA THE CIVIC WAS A BETTER BUY FOR THE PRICE

  • Why not get a TDI? - 2004 Toyota Prius
    By -

I was not been impressed with the Prius. It actually pales in comparison to the Volkdwagen Jetta TDI. The Prius has no power and its MPG is overrated. It gets on the highway about 43 mpg. I traded my Prius for the diesel Volkswagen Jetta and have been amazed by the TDIs power and handling. It also gave me 43 mpg. Another plus was the TDI had no waiting list and was under $20,000. Toyota dealers have taken advantage of the purchaser and mark the car up. My Prius was marked up $1000 over the MSRP. I got my TDI for delaer invoice. Same MPG but the TDI has better handling and power.

Numerous problems: gas tank needed replacement, tires last short time, transmission died.

  • Practical but Pedestrian - 2004 Toyota Prius

A bit unstable, but low drag and a fairly quiet ride. Even minor acceleration elicits a strained whine from the engine. Real world driving wont get claimed mpg (I get 40-45). Fine interior overall. The seat comfort is fair, front visibility excellent, rear visibility poor with severe blind spots. The "dashboard" strip beneath the windshield is great (reflects on windshield though). The center-mounted display screen is in theory a good idea, but boring and annoying as configured. The interior room is very good, and trunk space is fair. The finish of the car isnt bad for a car in this price range. It is a practical car, but not very fun to drive.

My 2004 Prius was bought in Oct 03 because of the claim of outstanding mileage, the federal tax incentive and I was driving a large crewcab pickup. Mileage range from the high 30s in the coldest (below -0 F.) months to the low 50s once the weather gets warmer in the spring. It gets the best mileage in city driving about 40 mph. It is fairly comfortable in day to day commuting. The hatchback feature is very useful with the extra room with the rear seats folded down. The biggest gripes are the light beige cloth upholstery that show dirt easy and the couple of times that it left me stranded with computer glitches once at dealer when they were doing a recall and once 300 miles away.

  • Bad! - 2004 Toyota Prius

I owned this car for three and a half years, used about 60,000 miles and it was awesome until it rained, snowed or was windy at all. I felt completely unsafe, and scared during any storm or driving on snow. The seats were decently sized, but hard as rocks. The gas mileage was the reason I bought it, and that stayed true to what was said about how great it was. I ended up buying a Honda SUV because this car scared me so much to drive even on a sunny day with lots of wind. I now feel so much safer, and would never purchase another small Toyota again.

  • EPA test lies to buyers - 2004 Toyota Prius

Gas millage advertised on EPA is a fraud. Actual millage about 32 to 40 if your lucky, called EPA and they said Toyota gave them figures? I asked them to show me that my car delivers 60/51. I would be happy to get 50/41. I think Toyota has these big figures on the cars so they can sell them fast.

  • Dont buy this car - 2004 Toyota Prius

The Prius has had 2 recalls so far, the CD player was replaced once already and the new one doesnt play most CDs, I have a bad leak behind the dash and my floors got soaked and now with the cold weather my floor is frozen. Im waiting for my appointment to bring the car in. Ive had the car 8 months and its been in the shop 3 times already and its going again. My fuel mileage isnt the same since the computer recall, and no one can tell me why. The best city mileage Im getting is bet. 28 and 35 MPGs. I cant wait to sell this thing.

  • Not for highway cruising - 2004 Toyota Prius
    By -

The Prius is an excellent choice if you do mostly city driving. It averages 46 miles per gallon. The car is surprisingly spacious and controls are convenient and easy to use. Build quality is high. However, the car is not a good highway cruiser. At speeds over 60 miles per hour especially in windy and wet conditions, the car has a very unsteady feel. The power is ok but the handling felt very "slippery" and thats on pavement that was merely wet.

  • New Prius not as good as old one - 2004 Toyota Prius
    By -

This is my second Prius. I purchased my first in 2000 and loved it. The new model has been a major disappointment. My major complaint is with the quality of the car. I have had numerous problems with navigation system and overall fit and finish of the car. Noises coming from dashboard and hatchback that dealer cannot find or fix. Hatchback sounds like old pickup truck going over bumps. Suspension stiff and noisy. Acceleration is overrated compared to auto reviews. Mileage not as good for my driving conditions because larger engine requires more time to warm up. At times engine violently shakes car when going off. Experience confirms Fall 2004 WSJ story on slip in Toyota quality.
