  • not for snow/cold weather - 2004 Toyota Prius
    By -

This car has been built for less weight and hence experiences loss of traction coupled with the long wheel base(room for battery)very hard to turn on snow/ice. The first snow we got(after buying) I hit the curb and bent the rim $380 + to replace. Got stuck 4 times. I only had that happen one other time in 27 years of dirving. Poor fuel economy in cold weather. Gas engine never shuts down, has to run to keep warm. I plan on storing this vehicle next winte

  • Im happy with this car - 2004 Toyota Prius

My Prius had been owned by the city of Chattanooga. It had minor damage to the front. I bought it with @12k. on it. I love the car and for me to say that is a real tribute to both the build quality, comfort and economy. I get pretty consistently @44 mpg around town and the highest I have ever gotten is 51. The car would be better served, however, with other radio options. Cant adapt an off the shelf radio because the radio in the car is integral to the function of the display. With gas prices approaching $3.50 this car is wise choice and I am doing something for the environment that I respect.

I have yet to get over 39.7 mpg and have driven approx. 5000 miles. Another concern is the fuel gage, when indicator gets down to the next to last one and I go and fill up I can only put about 7.5 gal of gas in it and I have only gone about 295 miles. I owed a 2001 prius and got around 43miles on a tank and went approx. 485 miles before filling up and with the increased mileage as advertised that is why I bought the 2004.

  • Engineering marvel, comfort lacking. - 2004 Toyota Prius

I find this car to incorporate many features all cars should have - variable transmission, smart entry and start, hybrid technology. They need to work on some comfort items. Controls on the driver armrest are not illuminated, multi-function display is hard to read in bright light, blinds - especially when backing up.

  • Adjust Your Mileage Expectations - 2004 Toyota Prius
    By -

We bought this car with high expectations. It has performed well compared to most comparable cars. Our mileage, however, has not met our expectations based on reviews and the EPA rating. Mileage has been in mid 30s. Its warmed up here the past few days, though and mileage has improved. We hope that mileage will increase as spring comes. While the styling is not our favorite, theres not much that can be done to adjust aerodynamics. Overall, though, its a good drive and were pleased with our Prius.

  • Where is the gas?and the mileage? - 2004 Toyota Prius

There also is a major problem or design flaw with the gas tank/or bladder.Apparently there is some kind of a flexible bladder that the gas goes into that expands and contracts. When the gas gauge registers empty and you fill the tank with gas you can only put 6 to 8 gallons of gas into the tank as there supposedly is still 3 to 4 gallons of gas still in the tank even though it was registering on empty. The Prius is supposed to hold 11.9 gal.of gas.Since you cannot trust the gas gauge I must fill the tank whenever it says empty.Mileage between fillups varies from a low of 270 to 390.

This vehicle is fun to drive. It is smooth and quiet. The car is just about perfect for everyday driving. The dashboard layout is superb. The car comes standard with almost all the necessities. It offers a different driving experience than its competitors. Easy to drive and great turning radius. Lots of interior space. The hatch style increases cargo room. Plus federal govt and state govt incentives. Reliablity so far seems to be good however I did notice a rattle come and go in the dashboard. Amazing technology for the price.

Im one of the lucky ones who puchased a 2004 Prius in Nov. 2003. The car is a pure pleasure to drive wherever you are in city or highway. I just returned from a trip to Mammoth, Calif. and back to Upland, Calif. a distance of 750 miles. I had the car packed with other friends ski gear and food for four days. We left this valley, elevation 1000 ft. with a gradual climb to Mammoth elevation 8000 ft. over all gas mileage to Mammoth was 50mpg and coming back to our valley we got 55mpg. It is a very adequate "road" car with good power and very comfortable.

  • Fib or Fraud? - 2004 Toyota Prius
    By -

Toyota claims 61 mpg town, 51 hwy. Actual in my 04 Prius after 5K miles is 43 town 49 hwy. A 30% difference on town driving is fraud. The overall mileage is good, but toyo doesnt deliver on their claims. The car is very unstable in a cross wind. Just like a 64 VW. And I have stability control. It can really be scary with big trucks tossing you around. Seats are very uncomfortable after about an hour. Toyo, you can do better. Rear view thru back window is crummy. Engine noise is LOUD when passing or on very steep hill. Sounds like its going to blow up. My wife really likes the car. Just dont expect Toyo to tell the truth.
