Overview & Reviews
The 2004 Toyota Prius is completely redesigned with a larger overall size, more power, better mileage and even more available features.
- Outstanding mileage, ultralow emissions, hatchback utility, reasonable price, excellent build quality.
- Less power and room than other midsize sedans, center-mounted gauges not intuitive.

THE MORE YOU DRIVE, THE MORE YOU SAVE - 2004 Toyota Prius
By Zigmeister - October 9 - 10:00 amTHE MILEAGE IS EXCELLENT, ALTHOUGH DIPS DOWN TO 30-SOME MPG IN EXTREMELY COLD WEATHER AND HOT WEATHER (USE OF HEATER AND AC). TOP MILEAGE HAS BEEN 50, AVERAGE IS IN THE MID TO LOW 40S. THE SMALLER TIRES ON THE PRIUS MAKE THEM *SLIGHTLY* MORE SUSPECTABLE TO DAMAGE, AND THE SMALLER WHEEL BASE REQUIRES SOMEWHAT MORE CAREFUL STEERING AT EXPRESWAY SPEEDS--ONE SHOULD AVOID JERKY MOVEMENTS AT HIGH SPEEDS. OVERALL, AS AN EVERYDAY CAR, IT HAS PREFORMED VERY RESPECATABLY, AND I AM SAVING A FORTUNE AT THE GAS PUMP. FOR THESE 2 REASONS, I PLAN TO BUY A 2ND ONE.

Computer problems - 2004 Toyota Prius
By Geode - July 22 - 3:33 pmThe Prius was a dream to drive from the time I bought it 3/04 until 9/04 when a dead cell in the aux battery killed the main computer. I was getting 48mpg city/53 mpg freeway. Now with the new computer, the motor runs more and I can rarely get about 10mph before the motor kicks in. Fuel economy has dropped. I now get 42mpg city/49mpg freeway. I have asked a number of times for Toyota to fix it and they say the computer is not putting out any error codes. Its frustrating. One other note. If the aux battery fails, you cant put the car in neutral, it has to be dragged up on the wrecker.

PRIUS IN THE OZARKS - 2004 Toyota Prius
By JACK L.COE - July 21 - 2:00 amFUN TO TO DRIVE. GREAT FUEL ECONOMY; BUT NOT THE 50MPG/HIGHWAY AND 60/MPG IN TOWN. I HAVE BEEN KEEPING ACCURATE RECORDS FOR MY FIRST 3000 MILES. I AM AVERAGING 42.6 OVERALL MPG. THE DISPLAY SCREEN IS GREAT. REAR VISABILITY IS POOR.

worth the money - 2004 Toyota Prius
By derrickandjodi - March 8 - 2:00 amI paid $3000 over MSRP, when most dealers are charging $6-7000 over. Im 62" and barely fit comfortably. The arm rest (center console) for the driver needs more padding. The gas mileage is awsome! There is more road noise than the Camery, but hands down makes up for it in mileage. All-in-all a great car.

Gas over $2.00/gal? No problem! - 2004 Toyota Prius
By nancela - October 27 - 10:00 amWhile I had to wait for my new Prius for 2 months, I have only owned my Prius for about a month. I am really loving it so far. I took it for a road trip of 400 miles each way and averaged 47.5 miles to the gallon on the highway. No complaints there!!! And the hatchback style is very convenient. I waited for several years for someone to come out with a convenient 4-door hatch.

want more - 2004 Toyota Prius
By spike8 - October 27 - 10:00 amWe are shopping for a vehicle. The prius is high on our list. We are waiting for 2005 to purchase but would like to see additional features on this car. would like to see a bit of a size increase, not much but a little. We hear Honda is making a hybrid accord which may be the biggest compitition.

Youll just have to wait :) - 2004 Toyota Prius
By Chris T (20-17) - June 27 - 2:00 amIts roomy. It turns heads. Its super cheap to run. Theres a waitlist as long as your arm. Ive got one of the few, and Im very happy with it. Fuel economy is great. It corners well, and is sufficiently quick off the mark to keep pace with aggressive SUV drivers. But you may not want to. This is a very relaxing car. I just have no desire to drive it hard (although it responds well enough.) And that for me is the major benefit. Commuting is no longer the misery it was

Not a basic Econobox but some flaws - 2004 Toyota Prius
By CA Kid - September 26 - 10:00 amI have a 50 mile daily commute so when it came time to get a new car fuel economy was a priority. The Prius fits the bill I average in the high 40s. In addition it ahs lots of storage and room for 4 people corfortably (better than my old Camry) Its fun to drive, gets lots of comments. Down sides, the interior is too light showes dirt easily, The drivers seat is a little narrow. Steering at freeway speeds is a little twitchy, like having a sluggish joystick. Paint chips easily. Panic stops the brakes grab oddly.

Very Good, With Some Reservations - 2004 Toyota Prius
By Jim Walters - July 14 - 2:00 amSummary: Great economy, solid but unexceptional performance, comfortable, streamlining forced some compromises in rear headroom and visibility, annoying problem with fuel gauge. Overall recommendation is BUY. Ive had it for about 4 weeks now. I get about 45 mpg in mostly highway driving. Thats great for a mid-size, but well below EPA estimates. Accelleration and handling are good, but its no BMW. Smooth ride and very quiet, except under hard accelleration. Cargo space seems good, but I havent had to use it yet. The hood slopes so steeply that you cant see the front end. You just have to know the car stops 3 feet past the windshield.

prius delivers - 2004 Toyota Prius
By berylrb - April 9 - 10:00 amThe leg room is great! The cruise works and delivers performance, lots of hills for us. It certainly is a screaming 4 cylinder so dont think to push the engine like a V8.
