This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, a larger 3.3-liter V6 replaces the 3.0-liter engine, resulting in 10 extra horsepower for a total of 230. Additionally, a fold-flat third-row seat (for two passengers) is now optional on base models and standard on the Limited. To keep the extra passengers content in back, a rear DVD entertainment system is available on Limited models. On the safety front, all Highlanders now come with an electronic stability control system and a tire-pressure warning system, while side curtain airbags for the first and second rows are optional across the board. Rounding out the changes are freshened exterior styling, new seat fabric, new instrument and door panel trim and a 5-hp boost for the base four-cylinder engine (now rated at 160).

Pros:
  • Seats up to seven, carlike ride and handling, smooth and powerful V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, lots of safety features.
Cons:
  • Gets expensive quickly, limited towing and off-road ability, bland personality.

I Was ready to buy the Honda CRV before test driving the Highlander. It is a little more expensive but it was much quiter and had plenty of power. The 4 cylinder engine is very powerfull. Im getting 23 to 24 MPG.

    1. Interior color is beige and exterior color is white- manufacturer lacks sense of color coordination. Interior should match white, such as gray. 2. The cost of fuel is high. The gallon/milage is higher in reality than advertized.

This truck if you want to call it that - it is more like a car and is fantastic. The 4 cyl is plenty peppy and gives good gas mileage. The back seats also recline which is comfortable for the passengers. The build quality is very good and attention is paid to detail. It came standard with stability control and abs brakes and traction control so even without 4wd it is good in the snow. I dont regret buying it for one minute.

I traded in a 2001 Volvo V70XC fully loaded--that has been nothing but one problem after another since my second year of ownership. (Had to have a new transmission after only 54000 miles!) I am very impressed with the comfortable ride, and ease of driveability of my new Highlander. I didnt get the Limited, because after owning the Volvo, I realized I didnt really use half the "bells and whistles" my Volvo included. I would advise going for the leather though. (I did) I was not impressed with the quality of the cloth seats offered in the Highlander. I look forward to many happy (trouble free) years of owning my new Highlander! :o)

I got tired of my mini van and decided to get an suv. After days of research, test driving and comparison shopping, I finally found it! The body is nicely contoured. Not too rugged. The interior is driver friendly, everything where you need it and sleek. The safety features are a major plus! the break assist and anti skid protection make me feel safer driving in poor weather.

  • SIMPLY THE BEST - 2004 Toyota Highlander

ONE OF THE BEST CARS I HAVE EVER OWNED. THE RIDE IS EXCELLENT, NICE SIZE, HANDLES WELL AND RELIABILITY IS GREAT. IT IS WELL DESIGNED, EVERYTHING IS WHERE IT SHOULD BE. JUST ALL AROUND ITS A GREAT CAR, ITS AN SUV BUT IT RIDES LIKE A CAR. ITS BIG BUT NOT TOO BIG. ITS NICE LOOKING AND ITS A TOYOTA. I HAD A RAV4 BEFORE THIS AND WANTED SOMETHING JUST A LITTLE BIGGER AND THIS IS PERFECT. I HAD A MINOR PROBLEM WITH THE TRACTION CONTROL LIGHT BUT THAT IS IT. WHEN I TRADE IN ILL DEFINITELY GET ANOTHER HIGHLANDER.

I usually own my vehicles for a minimum of 8 years and I expect this one to go even longer. Not just because of the quality, its a family friendly but also mom-friendly car. I love it. Plenty of horsepower to out maneuvre slow pokes on the road and still feel safe. It also looks great. The console was designed with a layout that does not require me to look to change channels, volume. Its 100% intuitive. All in all, GREAT purchase and not one second of buyers regret.

Very comfortable and enjoyable to drive, mileage is 19 to 24 around town and 29 plus on the highway. Handles great on the Interstate and Forest Service roads. Only complaint is difficult to read odometer and clock in daylight.
