This Year's Model Updates:

For 2004, a larger 3.3-liter V6 replaces the 3.0-liter engine, resulting in 10 extra horsepower for a total of 230. Additionally, a fold-flat third-row seat (for two passengers) is now optional on base models and standard on the Limited. To keep the extra passengers content in back, a rear DVD entertainment system is available on Limited models. On the safety front, all Highlanders now come with an electronic stability control system and a tire-pressure warning system, while side curtain airbags for the first and second rows are optional across the board. Rounding out the changes are freshened exterior styling, new seat fabric, new instrument and door panel trim and a 5-hp boost for the base four-cylinder engine (now rated at 160).

Pros:
  • Seats up to seven, carlike ride and handling, smooth and powerful V6 engine, fuel-efficient four-cylinder engine, lots of safety features.
Cons:
  • Gets expensive quickly, limited towing and off-road ability, bland personality.

Best car Ive ever owned. This car is not indicative of the current problems that Toyota is having. A totally reliable automobile that offers everything you need in an SUV. I never had to take this car in for any major problems, and you can even hear the engine at idle.

I lied- I actually have an 02 AWD 3L 6cyl model (purchased 11/01). The last 2 1/2 yrs in it have been WONDERFUL! No problems, and still as smooth & quiet as ever. Best vehicle Ive ever had! Passengers cant believe its not new, as it still rides like one. Drives fantastic in the Colorado winters.

I have had my new Highlander for a month now and love it. It rides like a dream on the interstates, but mountain climbing is also a piece of cake. Ive also mastered twisting radical steep downgrades in the mountains without touching the brakes. Im looking forward to trying it out in rain and snow. Oh...did I mention the 22 mpg? Yes, its true the 4 runner was sportier looking, but I was tired of "climbing up" into my ride everyday. The highlander gives me everything I want in a vehicle. After all, its a toyota!

Not much to it -- just plain happy with this SUV. Runs well, is comfy, nice inside, not a huge thing.

Just bought the Highlander (Limited) after researching and test driving the competitors. The only vehicle that came close in this price range was the LL Bean OutBack by Subaru. Almmost made a deal on the Subaru but it fell short on the interior room. The Highlander is Sleek and efficient and not so jazzed up to make you feel or look like your going to Las Vegas with a new Leisure suit on. This highlander is a blend of comfort, good looks, and runs like a wild Goose with the 3.3 engine, and five speed automatic trans. So far I cannot find one negative feature or discomfort. The Highlander is strong, quiet and a smooth wagon.

  • I always bought AMERICAN vehicles - 2004 Toyota Highlander
    By -

In my previous buying habits I only purchased American made vehicles out of loyalty. I wanted an SUV that got good gas milage, was comfortable to drive and was easier for my 82 y/o mother to get in and out of. No American vehicle matched those requirements, but all Japanese models did. I just picked the SUV I prefered and will never go back to just buying by loyaty again.

Love the Highlander.Handles great, big enough and typical Toyota quality. The shortcomings are few....turning radius could be better, driver window has a tendency to go all the way down when lowering (needs to be less sensitive) and shifting seems abrupt in city driving with medium to heavy traffic ,when stopping and going is increased. Overall a very good vehicle.......
