I traded in my 1st Avalon (85 XLS) for the new model last year after having testing the Acura, the S80, and others. The Avalon is the best car built for the money. One of the Avalons greatest strengths. I recently learned, is its safety and handling ability. Last weekend, while driving on the highway at approx 80 mph next to a semi, I hit a large rock in the road which blew both of my right tires. I had no problem keeping control of the car, slowing down, and getting to the right. I credit the Avalons handling with literally saving my life.

Have never had to do anything to this car except change the oil and tires--even the breaks are original at 88,000+ miles. It is comfortable, the mileage is great (and I drive hilly roads daily).

Fantastic Car, tight as the day I bought it. Great gas mileage, quiet, comfortable, reliable. I am looking into buying a new Avalon and giving this to my son. I have had no problems other than new tires, brakes and normal oil changes. Toyota quality at its best. I bought an 03 Highlander based on my experience with this Avalon. Cant think of a better car for the money. If you are looking for a reliable car with no worries I highly recommend an Avalon. My friends comment on how well it rides, how quiet and comfortable it is on long trips. I will have this car in the family for years.

No major problems in over 30,000 miles. Excellent dealer service. Small problem with the driver seat recliner that was fixed with a new part installed by the dealer within a week of my complaint.

The test drive felt like I was driving a Camry with bigger body. Very ugly and uncomfortable interior, exterior is not for everyone. Very poor corner handling, although engine is alright. Suspension is camry alike.

For my retiree life, I have enjoyed the economy of my Avalon. Trunk is very roomy. Would like an American seat. Needs more room in front than back. Dials need to be in front of steering for time, mileage, etc. Toyota should not scrimp on good tires on a new model, as their brand had to be replaced in 15,000 miles, when the manufacturer warranted (with fine print) 30,000. I bought a different brand and paid full price for Michelin which I asked for when purchased but they would not give to me; therefore I had to take their tires if I wanted the car. I did not like that. I got no consideration unless I replaced the shabby tires that came on it from that company.

We purchased Avalon new. Only repairs were front brake pads at 80,000 miles, rear brake pads at 87,000 miles. Battery at 7 years and tires at 40,000 and again at 80,000 miles. Rides better than a Cadillac DTS. Always starts in Iowa winter and great handling on snow and ice.

  • 8 yrs of comfort, speed, reliability - 2001 Toyota Avalon

After years we still love our efficient, fast, luxurious, super comfortable silent, low maintenance Toyota Avalon 2001 XL. Were both demanding drivers, but it puts up with our abuse, even jumping a tree trunk in front of the car in a snow storm and still coming out of it without wrecking. After 134,00 miles we finally are replacing original struts and shocks. A minor thing is that the check engine light comes on and off off late with an error code that may point to something related to the oil valve. At this moment the light is off though. Probably the new age of sensors comes with that kind of electronic oversensitivity.

Beginning at 15K, it began to perform like a vehicle with 4x the miles. Dealer glad to $ervice but blew off complaints with "they all do that". Sqeaking and klacking brakes, wind sway, rapid tire wear and general loose feel ... in spite of all the service. Traded at the end of year. Mediocre resale adding insult to injury. First and last Toyota for me!
