More power, more torque and added standard features make the Avalon one of the most appealing full-size sedans

Pros:
  • Toyota reliability, powerful V-6 engine, fit and finish
Cons:
  • Snoozeville, but still more enticing than, say, a Buick LeSabre

  • Over 200K - 1997 Toyota Avalon

I bought this car with 30K miles and now have 220K on it. I also had a steering column leak on this car and my 98 Sienna... dealers wanted to replace column I used a steering fluid with a sealer and never had a problem since. Interior noise is a problem and plastic interior trim pieces coming loose... but those are mostly cosmetic. I will give this car to my son for college and keep for a few more years.

We purchased this car as a school commute vehicle for my son. It had 70,000 miles at purchase. It now has 105,000 miles with only a small strut mount problem that cost a couple of hundred bucks to fix. Excellent reliable transportation.

  • OH WHAT A FEELING - 1997 Toyota Avalon

MY WIFE HAS HAD HER 97 AVALON XLS FOR 3 YEARS NOW. WE ARE JUST AS HAPPY TODAY AS WE WERE THE DAY WE BAUGHT IT. I LOVE JUST ABOUT EVERYTHING ABOUT THE CAR EXCEPT FOR SOME OF THE INTERIOR FEATURES THAT ARE ON THE NEW BODY STYLE, LIKE REAR CUP HOLDERS. ANOTHER THING MORE PERFORMANCE & COSMETIC UPGRADES AVAILABLE. OTHER THAN THE FEW NICK PICK THINGS I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS CAR AND WILL BUY ANOTHER WHEN THAT TIME COMES, IT HAS 112,000 RELATIVELY TROUBLE FREE MILES ON HER. THE ONLY PROBLEM LIKE MANY 97S IS RACK & PINION PROBLEM & STRUT BRACE, OTHER THAN THAT TOTAL TOYOTA QUALITY.

  • Not so reliable - 1997 Toyota Avalon

Owned since new. Many disappointing problems. Very expensive considering the number of amenities. 60k - transmssion leaks. <100k, all steering components had to be replaced. Power steering pump had to be replaced twice. Tire wear is a huge problem! This car wears out tires in 20k miles, even top rated tires.

  • Bought used/drives new - 1997 Toyota Avalon

Since I purchased this car used I have had to replace the windshield wipers! Thats it! Could not ask for a better reliable car. A friend had told me about a sludging problem that the v6s were having & had suggested I get the extended warranty which I did. It started to blow some light blue exhaust about 6 months after I had it. Took it into the dealer and they handled it & like I said, havent had to do a darn thing to it (other oil changes & reg maintenance). Would recommend these cars to anyone.

No its not the prettiest car, nor the funnest to drive, but this Avalon now has 210,000 mi. of hard city/highway miles on it and has never seen a tow truck. Ive replaced tires, brakes, belts and oil. The car has the original everything else, including the battery, spark plugs and even the muffler.

my toyota avalon has been very reliable vehicle. I am an insurance agent and drive my veh in business so I need a car that gets good mileage, dependable and comfortable. I have 150000 miles on my toyota and never had a problem. the only expense I have been out is up keep of the veh. I have enjoyed driving this vehicle more than any other vehicle I have owned.

  • Outstanding Car - 1997 Toyota Avalon

We bought this car used with 34,000 miles on it in 2001, now in 2006 it has 120,000 and shows no signs of wearing out anytime soon. Transmission glides, engine is strong, interior is elegant and comfortable and gas mileage is 31 on the highway. The trunk is huge and the seats feel like your sitting in your favorite chair at home. The only thing Ive had done is regular repairs and the air conditioning was charged this year, thats it!
