Overview & Reviews
After a body makeover and safety improvements (side airbags) last year, the Avalon heads into '99 with only minor updates. Daytime running lights with auto-off color-keyed foglamp covers and dual heated color-keyed power mirrors are new this year. A new three-in-one ETR/cassette/CD sound system is optional on the XL model and Lunar Mist Metallic replaces Golden Sand Metallic.
- A lack of interior room and out-of-date styling.

Absolutely flawless after 73k miles - 1999 Toyota Avalon
By Michael Babcock - March 20 - 10:00 amOur Avalon XL has never failed us once. (KNOCK ON WOOD!) It still drives as great after 73k miles as it did from day 1 (new). We leased it initially but had no problem buying the lease as it has performed flawlessly and has been a pleasure to drive daily. Lots of power with this V6 too!

Excellent value, comfort, performance - 1999 Toyota Avalon
By Marc B. - March 2 - 10:00 amI bought this car with 10,000 miles...now it has 85,000. Only repair was the A/C compressor replaced by the dealer - I paid labor only (after the warranty expired). Otherwise car is flawless, solid, comfortable and fun to drive. I have it serviced at the dealer (oil change $26.95) My only question is how long this will last. I might get 200,000 miles out of my Avalon, and Id be happy to drive it that long. Why pay 1,000s more for another car? For what? Having BMW written on the hood just isnt worth it.

Great Vehicle - 1999 Toyota Avalon
By Silver Ride - January 24 - 11:30 pmGreat and reliable vehicle. I drive 40k miles per year and only mechanical issue was to replace a starter once. I expect to get another 150k miles. One negative is I have had to replace the struts twice . I wish I had seen this page years ago as I had front noise for years that turned out to be the front strut holder that I finally had diagnosed and replace. Also the only safety issue is that the vehicle does not require you to put it in park first before you remove the key so that the vehicle could roll if you forget to put it in the park position.

Glad I Bought It - 1999 Toyota Avalon
By Derek M. - January 4 - 2:00 amBought the Avalon XLS new in 1999 and drove it 3000 miles soon after. It is comfortable, gets 28 miles/gallon on the highway, and has had no mechanical problems. My family and I have plenty of leg room and luggage space. I enjoy driving it in the city (Los Angeles), as well as on long trips. Its a great family sedan with all the comfort and reliability I expected fro

As good as any new car - 1999 Toyota Avalon
By stevesavalon - August 31 - 10:06 pmBought when 9 months old with 13,000 miles. Now have 118,000 and runs like new. 25 mpg commuting, 31 hwy. Replaced struts at 75,000, front brakes 75,000 and front brakes 115,000. Thats the only maintenance besides timing belt at 90,000. I cannot get excited about paying $35+ for a new car that isnt any better than this. Hope to see over 200,000+ before I would consider changing.

XLS Platinum Edition - 1999 Toyota Avalon
By Avalon4me - July 24 - 10:00 amOh, baby - if youre thinking about a 99 Avalon, take a long look at the Platinum Edition - Ive never seen a better color on a car! Oh yeah, the rest of the car aint bad either! Just as a basketball team works best when theres great chemistry, the Avalons combination of attractiveness, safety, comfort, reliability and resistance to depreciation really come together in a great package. I thought about buying an Avalon in 1998 - instead decided to save money and get a Sable. What was I, nuts??

FUN TO DRIVE - 1999 Toyota Avalon
By jerry miles - July 12 - 2:00 ami bought this car from a friend four months ago and have been very impressed with it. it is economical but adequately powered to move in and out of traffic when you need to (30 mpg). it is one of the better looking avalon body styles as some arent really striking. its many accessories are well positioned to the driver and easy to understand. with the exception of intermittent driver window operation and water filling wheelwell of trunk after a rain i have been very impressed with build quality. smooth ride!

Best Car I have ever owned - 1999 Toyota Avalon
By Suzie - June 17 - 2:00 amThe Toyota Avalon is a great car with a reasonable price. The car is reliable, comfortable and quiet. This car is sporty yet has plenty of room making a comfortable ride for the passengers. Has great pick-up speed and the stereo system is fabulous. I would never consider buying a different Sedan.
