This Year's Model Updates:

The Avalon has been redesigned for 2005 and now offers a more powerful V6 and even more room than before.

Pros:
  • Carefully constructed cabin befitting a Lexus, powerful and smooth V6 engine, superb ride quality, huge rear seat.
Cons:
  • Not as much fun to drive as a Chrysler 300, stability control can only be had on top-rung models.

  • Great Family Car - 2005 Toyota Avalon

I had to run from the hurricane with my invalid mother, pregnant daughter and 17 yr old son. We were all comfortable during the 1200 mile trip to and from. The car was quiet, comfortable and on interstate the gas mileage was great. there are some "blind" spots when you are travelling faster than normal on the interstate that you need to watch out for.

  • 2005 Avalon-Transmission Problems - 2005 Toyota Avalon

I bought a new 2005 Avalon last year (my first experience buying a Toyota) because I had heard such wonderful things about it and the Camry. Boy, am I disappointed ! The transmission is horrible. It "bucks" when accelerating from a stop or slow driving. I was told that it needs to "learn" how to behave from the driver. During one service appointment, they "untaught" it to see what would happen. No change. My kids get car sick, its so bad. The dealer told me to keep checking with them for a "fix". If there is no "fix" soon, I plan to get rid of it while its still under warranty so it will have a good selling point.

Excellent road car. Have some issues with quality and ergonomics. Transmission seems to shift excessively in traffic. EPA estimates were off significantly under old stds; now are more in line with my experience.

  • Not the Toyota I Expected - 2005 Toyota Avalon

Our Avalon was purchased w/ about 90,000 miles...we took it for a short test drive it was great! HOWEVA, when driving on longer trips, both passenger and driver seats become uncomfortable, to the point of numb legs. After about a year of ownership, during an oil change, the technician informed me there was a lot of oil on the engine. We took it to the dealer, and a crankshaft gasket had failed (they said it is a freak thing). Most expensive repair ever. Otherwise, it has been fairly reliable

  • Toyota Quality? - 2005 Toyota Avalon

Very soft paint. Chips and pit marks started to appear almost from the first day. After the first winter there were easily 100 "holes" in the paint all over the car. Toyota would not stand behind the defect. They stated it was from road salt and stones, etc. I agree that is what causes the marks but I looked at many others cars with similar driving conditions and none were even close to the condition of mine. The next big problem was with the brakes. A front caliper locked up at about 44K miles. The repair - two front calipers, rotors, pads, labor was almost $900. It would have been much much more at the dealer with OEM parts. So this is Toyota quality?

  • Solid compared to competition - 2005 Toyota Avalon

Ahead of Chrysler300, Ford500, and Buick Lacrosse, but has several shortcomings. The throttle is lagging, not enough headroom in the back, more road noise than I expected, and the wood interior looks and feels decidedly fake. HID Headlights not available on XLS. The steering is too light for the "performance sedan". Overpriced compared to Lexus ES330.

  • Problem with my Avalon? - 2005 Toyota Avalon

We bought our 2005 Toyota Avalon XL in May and were very satisfied with it but now I am beginning to have second thoughts. It has less than 3000 miles on it now. I made a 200 mile round trip in July and it made 31 mpg. Great!! I really bragged it up. But two weeks ago I made the same trip but on a breezy day and temps in the 90-100 degree range. This time it made 25 mpg as well as downshifted on slight inclines. Yesterday I had to make the same trip under nearly the same hot/breezy conditions and it made 25 again and had the same problems with downshifting on the slightest of inclines. The dealer tells us that Toyota is having problems with Avalons fuel mileage in hot weather. ??????

  • exceptional value - 2005 Toyota Avalon

This car has to be the best value on the market. It is like a Lexus without the price and badge. Its the quietest car i test drove and I drove a lot of cars from German to Japanese. I have owned two Toyotas before this one. I expect the same incredible reliability i had with my last two Camrys.

  • The Tradition Continues - 2005 Toyota Avalon

This is my 3rd Avalon (1997, 2000, 2005). With each redesign, theyve improved significantly (with the exception maybe of the 2000-2004 looks ;) ). Why on earth should I spend $8,000 or $10,000 more on a Lexus ES or an Infiniti M when here I have a smoother ride, a more reliable vehicle (look at Consumer Reports) right here for a much lower price? A sports car it aint - of course it doesnt pretend to be either. Theres enough of the feel of the road for me, and of course, the comforts and the reliability of Toyota.

  • 2005 Avalon is reliability plus - 2005 Toyota Avalon
    By -

I have owned this car for over two years and have 38,000 miles plus on it. Other than the front window shade holder falling out and being replaced, there have been no other maintenance problems. This is the first car that I have ever owned that has been maintenance free. Reliability has been outstanding!
