This Year's Model Updates:

After a body makeover and safety improvements (side airbags) last year, the Avalon heads into '99 with only minor updates. Daytime running lights with auto-off color-keyed foglamp covers and dual heated color-keyed power mirrors are new this year. A new three-in-one ETR/cassette/CD sound system is optional on the XL model and Lunar Mist Metallic replaces Golden Sand Metallic.

Pros:
Cons:
  • A lack of interior room and out-of-date styling.

PRO: We have had it since 1999 and purchased it used. We have had no problems. We traveled cross the US twice and never had a single need other than gas and oil changes. Great car. CON: cup holder in bad location....

I bought my 1999 Toyota Avalon Platinum XLS in 2006. It had 99000 miles on it and this did not cause me alarm since I have had a Toyota Camry before. My Toyota Avalon now has 187,000 miles on it and is still running strong! I have had to put routine maintenence items, such as brakes, battery, tires, but other than that it is running like the day I bought it. I am looking at trading it off for something newer, not because I need to, just maybe wanting something newer. Trouble I am having is when I test drive other vehicles I am comparing it to my Avalon, so far all the "competitors" have lost. Gas mileage is still 24/28 hwy. Excellent choice and great car!

  • Should have stayed with Honda Accord - 1999 Toyota Avalon

Very disapointed with the value for the dollars spent. Have had numerous trips to dealer for faulty airbag light, driver window failing several times and dealer unable to diagnose, suggested fix was to replace motor in door with no guarantee that this was the true problem, now right rear window wont work, struts are bad, door molding fell off, side molding came loose, trunk flooded from rain, cost $200 to replace gasket at dealer, heated seats work poorly, wonderfully riding car but not worth the money, would not buy another Toyota.

  • Not nearly as well built as a Camry! - 1999 Toyota Avalon

We own a 96 Camry and a 99 Avalon XLS. In spite of having paid lots more for the Avalon its pretty much a piece of junk compared to the (older!) Camry. The Camry is still tight and rattle free while the Avalon is a complete rattle trap with only 52,000 miles. The front door locking mechanism fell apart after 40,000 miles- out of warranty and cost $530.00 to repair. The right front rotor is worn out... we are trading it in on a Saab wagon next week as Im tired of paying the repair bills. I am a stay at home mom and the car is driven back and forth to school, the grocery store, and church. Needless to say, we are extremely gentle on cars. I will never buy another Avalon.

  • Great mileage for a big car - 1999 Toyota Avalon

Great car except for the springs and struts. At 25k miles the ride started to become very hard. Felt every bump. Complained to dealer and toyota. Their solution was too much air in tires. This while under warranty. Having springs and struts replaced at 55k miles. This should solve problem. Toyota will not be my choice to do the work. Taking to independent garage. Really believe the spring problem was known and ignored by toyota, since it only affected ride comfort, not handling. Also bought 2004 Avalon XL and the ride quality between the two is laughable. 2004 rides on air, 1999 inspects all defects in the road.

I have had to replace the O2 sensors and several related components. The front struts and strut towers. According to the dealer they were not warrant or extended warranty items. They were replaced about 50,000. I can understand the struts, but not the towers also. This vehicle has a huge rear seat, and a huge trunk, the trunk is big enough to carry lots of cargo

This vehicle has been my best auto purchase to date considering I paid $15900 in the summer of 2002 with approximately 48000 miles after it came off a lease. It is very roomy and luxurious plus it gets decent gas mileage in Southern California traffic @ 23 mpg! On the freeway with no a/c it gets 29 mpg. The construction is very sturdy and it has only required normal replacement of 4 tires, battery, platinum spark plugs and brake pads. The only unusual replacement item was the coil pack which I installed myself becuse the dealer cost was outrageous. Id recommend buying the Haynes repair manual to all!

Reliability for the most part has been excellant. Nice looking car for price range. Needs new trunk caulking..leaks some in heavy rain.. Had to replace front struts and front strut holders at 59,000 miles.

  • Excellent value, comfort, performance - 1999 Toyota Avalon

I bought this car with 10,000 miles...now it has 85,000. Only repair was the A/C compressor replaced by the dealer - I paid labor only (after the warranty expired). Otherwise car is flawless, solid, comfortable and fun to drive. I have it serviced at the dealer (oil change $26.95) My only question is how long this will last. I might get 200,000 miles out of my Avalon, and Id be happy to drive it that long. Why pay 1,000s more for another car? For what? Having BMW written on the hood just isnt worth it.

Great car; no trouble except for a dead battery after 8 years of ownership and a failed starter after 6 years of ownership.
