This Year's Model Updates:

All 1999 models get two new exterior colors, improved speakers and a new head unit for the three-in-one stereo combo. The GLE trim level gets alloy wheels added to its standard equipment list, and all alloy wheels now have a bright finish instead of a painted finish. All SE trim levels are now called SE Limited (SE-L) models and come with additional equipment.

Pros:
Cons:
  • The Altima lost its looks when it was redesigned. The quality of the construction of the materials also seems to be down from its previously high level.

  • This is the best car ever - 1999 Nissan Altima

I have a 1999 Nissan Altima GXE. Just a solid, extremely reliable car. I have almost 240,000 miles and running strong. No issues. very little maintenance done, one sensor, AC compressor, alternator and that is about it in 7 years I have owned it. I think I can get another 50k or 60K miles easily on this car. Highly recommended car. Best car I have ever had.

Extremely reliable, 227K miles on it with no issues, just regular maintenance. Nissan knows how to build engines. Will keep it until falls apart. Very recommended.

Great reliability. Have done nothing to the car except tires, brakes and oil. Nothing else has gone wrong with the car. Very low maintenance.

  • Its O.K. - 1999 Nissan Altima

My car has 80k miles now, and if you want a reliable car this is the one. But if you are looking for great features, look elseware. The "leather" feels fake, and does not come with some amenities found in comparably priced vehicles. Exterior has bad paintjob and scratches easily. Interior has very weak plastic parts such as door handles and console area.

  • Great car - 1999 Nissan Altima

I bought this car mainly because I needed reliable transportation, and I have not been disappointed. I bought it new in 99 and it now has 75,000 miles. I havent yet had any problems with the car, other than a torn C/V boot. Ive replaced the front and rear brakes once, and the tires twice. Its very peppy for a 4 cyl non-turbo engine and it has a very stable ride on any type of road. The only downsides that Ive found so far is the iffy gas mileage and the excessive wind noise at highway speeds. Mostly I can barely get over 300 miles per tank with mixed city/highway driving, which is around 20 MPG. Other than that, its been a great car.

  • 223K Miles and Still Going - 1999 Nissan Altima
    By -

I have 223K miles and still going. I love this car. I bought it at 12K miles in 2001. Its had very few problems. The only time I had a serious problem was the alternator went at around 170K. The interior plastic is rather cheap though and my visor attachments had problems. Pretty minor stuff. My husband believes in maintenance so weve changed out parts such as tie rods, spark plugs, radiator (was leaking), CV boot and brakes. Very little maintenance in 11 years. 4 hours in mechanic shop is longest time (alternator). Paint fading, 1 leather seat cracked. At this point the shocks could use replacement, but, even the shocks are better than most cars. 26-29 MPG. Love the Altima!

  • Second Car and Used But Great - 1999 Nissan Altima
    By -

I am a college student and this is my second car and I love it. I have had it for about a year and I have had no problems with this car. I drive it back and forth to college and home about 2000 mile round trip. All I have to do to the car is get the oil changed and replace the tires and she runs perfectly.

  • Problem Free - 1999 Nissan Altima

I bought the car new in 1999. Drive 100 miles a day to work and back. Absolutely no problems at all. Cruises nicely at expressway speed (or slightly higher.) Comfortable ride that seems to get better as you add more passengers. At 6-4, Im definitely at the upper limit of who the cars was designed for. Engine has been great! With 112,000 mi, Ive replaced the front brakes once, the tires once, the serpentine belt, and a $.99 hose clamp. Not bad. Interior is the epitome of conservative, which is nice because I havent gotten sick of looking at it.

This is my second nissan altima, a wonderful car at an affordable price, fits all my friends and goes across town and back with the low fuel light on. Nothing like driving a stick...
