This Year's Model Updates:

Mercedes expands its M-Class with the addition of the more powerful and luxurious ML430 and gives the 320 more standard equipment.

Pros:
  • Capable sport-utes with Mercedes-Benz levels of refinement, powerful engines.
Cons:
  • ML320 looks like the Mercury Villager minivan from the rear. These sport-utes are better on-road than off.

  • I loved my ML430! - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I purchased my ML430 pre-owned(1 other owner) in 2004. The car was well taken care of and the maintenance books showed that the original owner KEPT THE MAINTENANCE UP on schedule!! When I purchased it had 40k miles at 5 years old at the time. I too kept the maintenance up with a VERY good Mercedes Benz dealership and this SUV did not give me 1 problem, until 5 years later at 120k, normal wear and tear and aging. At that point, any car will need replacement maintenance. I really enjoyed my ML 430, this has been a very good car to me and my family. Safe, reliable, beautiful...it aged very well, people were shocked that it was 10 years old last year! I look forward to my next M-Series!

  • rollover - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

This is thje seconfd ML I have rolled. This rollover came whena car hit the left rear quarter after running a red light. The car was traveling at 35, and I was travelling at a similar speed. The ML rolled to the side, upon being hit, and then onto the roof. I was not injured, except for a laceraton on my head. This is the second ML I flipped, the other wasa 2001, that the right rear tire blew. I skidded, ;lost control of teh car,and the car again went right over.

  • FUEL PUMP - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

I HAVE OWNED THIS CAR FOR TWO WEEKS. The fuel pump went at 34k miles. This happened driving the car back from purchasing it.... Mercedes warranty covered the car, but now my wife has lossed confidence in the vehicle. I hope no other problems occur. The car drives nice, for a truck

  • Never again for Mercedes - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I traded in my Cadillac Deville that had no problems with 112,000 miles (never one repair) for this SUV assuming that it would be more reliable since it was made by Mercedes- Benz. Was I wrong. After 55,000 miles I had to replace the drive shaft. Then the harmonic balancer went out and took everything else out with it, that cost 1200.00 and turned out to be a recall. M-B reimbursed me 200.00 of the 1200.00. I have also replaced the transmission, transfer case, rear shocks, front struts. I have put almost 10,000 in repairs in this vehicle. The only good I have to say is the safety. I was the first car rearended by a surburban in a 4 car pile up and neither myself or daughter was hurt.

  • Great design and ride but quality stinks - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

I have owned a 99 ML320 since new and it now has 105,000 miles on it. I love the ride and utility of the vehicle and to be fair it has never failed to start nor has it ever stranded me except when the battery failed (and then a nice MB tech arrived to replace it at cost of battery). That said, the quality stinks. The car has been in the shop about 20 times for various bits and pieces failing or falling off. Everything from rusting lug nuts (within 90 days of new) to a failed steering sensor (requires replacement of entire steering column). This car is expensive and annoying to keep on the road. Final insult is that now the drivers door has penetrating rust. Buy a Honda Pilot instead.

  • Never Again - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Bought ML320 used at 22K miles. Had it for 20 months, and got rid of it. The final straw was the failure of the third ESP/BAS unit. Wife drives my Volvo wagon with 230,000 miles because it was more reliable! ESP/BAS was replaced twice at $1800 each time, and needs replacing AGAIN! Fuel pump failed ($800); new rear struts ($250);"Check Engine" light on constantly. In 20 months, we spent over $5K in repairs - Plastic pices, trim and other interior parts were coming loose; wind noise; moon roof never would seal properly; window drive motor on its last legs (which I refused to put any more money into the car). NEVER NEVER AGAIN WILL I BUY A MERCEDES BENZ

  • Junk - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

Everything starts falling apart at about 80k. Weve spent well over $2k in repairs in the last 6 mo. and I was just told that weve got an entire page of other issues that need to be addressed as I had it at the dealer for our third recall! Last recall we paid $1200 in repairs before they issued the recall. After telling us theyd reimburse us we had to wait 6 months before Mercedes did so, and only after we had to start legal action. MB is not even close to being in Toyotas league. Its disgraceful what they charge for these vehicles/service and unfair that only a dealer can check fluids. MB service shouldnt be required to keep the vehicle from repairs.

  • MB as a rugged family car - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

I needed a car in the AWD category which was suited for rough off-roading trips in the country and daily suburban mom, and which wouldnt embarass my husband when he had to park it next to his super-status-concious coworkers. For the money, this car fit the bill. Remembering there wasnt much out there in the smaller 6+passenger SUV category at the time and that this car was originally priced considerably less than the other entries in this category, like Lexus and Toyotas, I can forgive many annoying flaws. Im still a loyal owner, but I havent had any of the reliablity issues the other reviewers had, and I wouldnt tolerate them if I did.

  • AWFUL VEHICLE ALL AROUND - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

I dont know what you people giving this car a good review are smoking, but what I do know is that drugs are bad. Ive had about 21 vehicles so far, and the 99 ML320 is the most awful, poorly built, unreliable, thing (not a car!) that has ever been sold on this galaxy. The car was well kept and still it has 177k miles ONLY running because I have basically rebuild the darn thing. EVERYTHING on the car has gone bad! a few things such as clutch fan, a/c compressor, cold/hot air selector motor have actually been changed a few times! Other than that, name it (radiator, electrical components, all cabin controls for everything, drive shaft bearing, catalytic converter, suspension, etc) went bad

  • Dont Buy - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I had one problem after another. Sorry engineering! Things that should never break broke with little use. My parents had one also and had to have it towed 4 times.
