This Year's Model Updates:

Mercedes expands its M-Class with the addition of the more powerful and luxurious ML430 and gives the 320 more standard equipment.

Pros:
  • Capable sport-utes with Mercedes-Benz levels of refinement, powerful engines.
Cons:
  • ML320 looks like the Mercury Villager minivan from the rear. These sport-utes are better on-road than off.

  • Solid Delivery - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I drive the ML for both city and highway use in the metro -Detroit area. Great in all weather. Havent had any problems with the car compared to various issues that Ive read about in magazine and web-sites. Great value for the money in terms of features and re-sale.

  • Very Pleased with ML 320 - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I traded my BRAND NEW JGCL with 16K miles on it due to numerous problems. Got the 99 ML320 for an excellent price with under 42K miles, and I am not looking back. The car handles well, and is excellent in wintery weather/ice. Acceleration is good (especially in highway traffic), and my choc lab LOVES this car - no more lurching off the back seat when I drive off due to excellent stability! Just to be safe, bought an extended warranty for an additional 36k miles - have not had to use it yet, so maybe I wasted my money on that. Overall, an excellent buy. Now, I just have to convince my family to bury me in it when the time comes!

  • Saved my ass - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

No better vehicle than one that gets you through a 16 inch snow storm, 8 inch ice storm, 24 hour sleet storm through 4 states in 16 hours on old tires and yet is 4 years old without a mishap. All the while watching drivers get in all manner of accidents in states that have no clue how to deal with inclement weather. WV actually had pick-up trucks with plows on I-79!

  • MY LAST MERCEDES - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

This was my 4th and will be my last Mercedes. With fond past experiences I didnt mind paying the extra cash for the 3-pointed star. Replaced many parts during the warranty period and got to know my repair service rep very well. When the warranty period expired, the true pain commenced. Replaced: the ESP/BAS unit twice at $1600 each time, one fuel pump ($870), two window electronic control sets ($400 each), interior panel lights went out twice, the steering wheel cover is loose and interior/exterior trim pieces keep coming loose. The wind noise is like a Mack truck. Now there is a whining noise under the hood. Enough is enough!!!

  • Love the vehicle - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I have had this vehicle now for almost three years and I love it. The handling is exceptional and and I have no mechanical or electrical problems what so ever. I recommend my car and all the versions after it to my friends and convinced one to purchase a 2002 version and as he said, I will never purchase another car ever again.

I have owned this MB for about 2 years and have not had any problems except for a cup holder I broke with my knee that was replaced by Dealer free with no questions asked. The vehicle has been totally reliable and is fun to drive.

  • An SUV that keeps falling apart - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

This clunker I own has kept falling apart since 1999. Accordion skylight roof control died within 6 months, head lamp burned out in 9 month, rear cargo bay plastic sidewall cracked up and broken in 1-1/2 years, windows driver side windows control died in 2 years, one headlamp light bulb burned out in 9 months, lamp cover leaking water inside and got cataract-like problem that blocked light seriously, bad chair design that has blocked blood circulation in my right thigh every time I drive, no lumbar support that caused back pain, many mysterious noises all the time while driving, terrible OEM General tires that made the rear part skidded so dangerously every time turned. Super gas guzzler!

  • Decent Buy - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I bought this 1999 model in late 1998. I know the 1998 models and numberous problems. I have done 69K miles and have had the following warranty repairs. Transmission Control Module (Warranty) Driver Side Power Window Switch (Warranty) Alarm System (Warranty) Power Steering Hose (Recall) Auxulliary Cooling Fan Harness ( Out of Warranty: $400). Besides this I have done the regular maintenance, brakes, belts, etc. Overall it has been very reliable. I have never been stranded. I hear a lot of horror stories and sometimes think about trading it in. But since I have had no major problems, I dont want to start making new car payments and will probably keep it untill the first major problem.

  • Good car for the price. - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

A very good car. Fun to drive. Average gas mileage. Rides a bit rough. Overall a good car for the price.

  • 40,000 Miles of Use - 1999 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

My Mercedes has been reliable and in general a joy to drive. Negatives: 1. 26,000 $900.00 brake jobs. 2. Everything done to the vehicle, not covered by warranty costs more than $400.00. 3. Rattles and squeaks. 4. Paint finish is pretty, but very poor in its ability to withstand normal road dings.
