This Year's Model Updates:

The ML430 is replaced by the ML500, which has a 5.0-liter V8 packing 288 horsepower. Over 1,100 parts of the truck have been modified, but the ML's exterior remains largely the same. New bumpers, clear-lens headlights and revised side mirrors are the most noticeable exterior changes. Inside, the center console sports a new look, and wood grain trim becomes standard on all models. A new automatic climate control system is now standard, and rear-seat passengers get dual cupholders and separate ventilation controls.

Pros:
  • Safe, comfortable, car-like ride and handling, surefooted in bad weather.
Cons:
  • Reputation for poor build quality, looks like a minivan from some angles, confounding COMAND navigation system.

  • ML500 - Excellent buy - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Bought used with 25,000 km. Great deal, had depreciated a lot and bought it through a broker - Royalty Auto for $42k CDN. Great experience. Had it for 6 months now. Needed winter tires (were in Calgary) and it handles well in the snow. No maintenance issues so far. I am not using a dealer for the maintenance, prices much better. We have 2 large dogs and a new house and have hauled lots of stuff with no problems. The versatility of the rear seats is excellent. The 5litre engine has plenty of power and a good roar, but gas use isnt as terrible as Id expected. Had it inspected by 3rd party before I bought. Brakes squeak when cold

Bought the M because it was cheaper than the X5. After two months, it already feels old and cant wait to trade it in next year for the Cadillac. Bad investmen

  • My second ML320 - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

My first 1999 ML320 was a plain Jane model. It was unbreakable and the dealer support was much better than I expected. Although I bought it used, and from out of the area, the local dealers always exceeded my expectations. I liked the 99 but the 02 is dramatically improved. Every feature works better and I treated myself to all the amenities. I dispute the claims that the ML series is flawed and poorly assembled. Everything worked, always, and I used it hard.

  • Poor quality ML 320 - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

My ML320 has the poorest quality of any car Ive ever owned. Many, many things have broken, the interior pieces keep falling apart, the heater/aircon is always too hot or cold, the rear window sometimes goes down on its own (also happens on a friends ML320). When the warranty expires Ill need a second mortgage.

  • nice looking but lame - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

i cannot imagine a Mercedes can be so usless, it is comfortable but, yeah these things flip over. I mean my 89 mercury sable station wagon runs better. If the car came with a recipt I wouldnt have it tommorrow.

  • This is my third M-class - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I am aware that other consumers have had diffuculties in the past regarding the M-class however I bought a 98, 320 when it came out, a 99 430 when it came out and a 02 500 as soon as it came out. I have been extremely happy with it and I love to see the look of disbelief on the faces of the Mustang GT drivers when off the line and to 60mph or more they are only a distant memory in my rearview mirror. I couldnt justify the added expense of the ML55, the 500 provides all of the power, and more, than I will ever need.
