This Year's Model Updates:

The ML430 is replaced by the ML500, which has a 5.0-liter V8 packing 288 horsepower. Over 1,100 parts of the truck have been modified, but the ML's exterior remains largely the same. New bumpers, clear-lens headlights and revised side mirrors are the most noticeable exterior changes. Inside, the center console sports a new look, and wood grain trim becomes standard on all models. A new automatic climate control system is now standard, and rear-seat passengers get dual cupholders and separate ventilation controls.

Pros:
  • Safe, comfortable, car-like ride and handling, surefooted in bad weather.
Cons:
  • Reputation for poor build quality, looks like a minivan from some angles, confounding COMAND navigation system.

  • We love our 320 ML - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

This is our first ML. We have enjoyed a lot. It is really safe and confortable and fun to drive. Fuel economy shouldnt be an issue when you buy a SUV, there are plenty of GEOs out there if that is what you are looking for. My wife love it, she can put 2 strollers, lots of shopping bags, 2 big car seats, 2 friends etc. I feel my family is safe when they ride in this car. There have not been important reliability issues and we are planning to buy again a ML. Service was great and 100% better than BMW.

  • Sad story - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

In 1998, after watching Jurassic Park featuring the original ML320, we headed towards town to wait-list and buy it. Big mistake. They were so rare that we werent able to test drive. Only through broshures. Our #1 ML was full of problems, so Mercedes offered to trade us to a 99 ML320. The instrument panel (lower) collapsed mysteriously, and the trunk hinge rattled like crazy. Traded in for a 02 ML320. The new bumpers look worse. I should have got an X5 or RX300. I currently also own a 2002 S430, and its WORSE than the ML

  • The little truck that could! - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

We bought this for normal everyday driving. Found it to be reliable and capable. Great engine and transmission. The box on frame design is a bit too rough, but the feel of durability is amazing. It has more umph than my old GMC. The tire wear was on the high side as was the brake wear. Stopping a 5000 truck takes a lot of brake lining. Excellent visability, nice looking, easy to maintain. Avg about 20mpg. Clean and efficient. Handles people, things and long drives like a pro.

  • So far...So good - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Not really that powerful, but economical, despite the premium fuel demand. Avg mpg 17/21. No cost maintenence (warranty). No cost repair (even light bulbs and wiper blades). Ride could be softer. Seats could use lumbar. The heater will roast you and the AC will keep you cool. Sun roof, power rear wing windows...Why? I replaced the brake pads at 20K for ceramic, no wear. If the car is parked for 3 days, the security system drains the battery dies. Video system...Why? Would I buy another? No...initial cost, but then, the 2006 model has been very nicely upgraded!!! ;-)

  • The best SUV - ML320 - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

With recent advances in safety, comfort, off-road ability and on-road performance, Mercedes should maintain a strong presence in the luxury SUV market.

  • not competitive with other suvs in class - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Mbz Doesnt hold its value at trade in time. Kind of tank like in ride and handling. Cheap interior and parts inside will fall off and dont feel good to the touch. Tiresome ride after 30 minutes.

  • Love the SUV - Hate the minor repairs - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

The car has been perfect for us in terms of design, comfort, features, durability, etc. Our gas mileage has been better than expected at 18.6 city and up to 23+ highway (I confess to having a heavy foot so its often only 22). Brakeware has been super too; 45,000mi front and rears are still OK at 72,000mi. But, had to replace fuel pump, windshield washer checkvalve, "baby safe" seat sensor, and an instrument panel bulb. Nothing major, but even with good service (and free loaner cars) its been a hassle some time.

  • A competent luxury SUV - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
    By -

The M class is one of the best luxury SUVs in the market today. Its handling is great and its ride quality is good. The interior of the M class is simple and functional with plenty of luxury amenities. Its exterior is tough yet elegant. The reliability of the M class seems to have improved considerably over the years and now appears to be on par with the competition. I would recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a safe and competent mid- size luxury SUV.

  • PERFECT SO FAR - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class
