This Year's Model Updates:

The ML430 is replaced by the ML500, which has a 5.0-liter V8 packing 288 horsepower. Over 1,100 parts of the truck have been modified, but the ML's exterior remains largely the same. New bumpers, clear-lens headlights and revised side mirrors are the most noticeable exterior changes. Inside, the center console sports a new look, and wood grain trim becomes standard on all models. A new automatic climate control system is now standard, and rear-seat passengers get dual cupholders and separate ventilation controls.

Pros:
  • Safe, comfortable, car-like ride and handling, surefooted in bad weather.
Cons:
  • Reputation for poor build quality, looks like a minivan from some angles, confounding COMAND navigation system.

  • I LOVE IT!!! - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

After going back and forth between the ML320 and the Lexus RX 300 I feel we made the best decision. The free maintance more than makes up for the price difference. It drives very smooth and easy to whip into parking spaces. We are now a Mercedes-Benz family for life.

  • Not the best choice for a used SUV - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I have owned this car since new. It now has 110,000 miles and is still like new since almost every part has been replaced or repaired at least once. I have found the car is easy to work on and most parts are available on line or at local auto parts stores. There are also great web forums to help diagnose problems and instructions for repairs. There have been so many problems I could not begin to list them all, but one positive thing I can say it has never left me stranded. I would only recommend buying this car if you have the ability to do most of the repairs and maintenance yourself, otherwise this car is just a money pit that is best avoided

Love the ML500. Park Place gives excellent service.

I own an SL500 and was impressed with the quality and craftmanship so when I need and SUV the ML was a logical choice. That is what I used to think. This think has been in the for service 6 times for electrical and cosmetic issues. My SL never has been so I am not unreasonable or a motor head that covers it etc... Overall do not buy this car for the money you can have an BMW X-5 with out the headaches!

  • Still the best SUV around. - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Even better than the original 1998 version.

  • Much improved over 2000 year - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Had an ML in 1999 and 2000. 1999 was noisy, and 2000 had many electrical problems. However, I needed the space so I tried the 2002 after I heard it was much more reliable. It has been! Great car.

  • 2002 ML 500 after 2 years of ownership - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Bought in Nov 2001, my ML500 was one of the first in the Houston area. I considered the ML55 AMG for the extra zip, but the 55 has a huge, glaring disadvantage: cargo space. The ML500 has plenty of zip, plenty of cargo room. The Sport Package also gives the ML a more agressive, sporty look. This is a magnificent machine, 26 months after delivery, the rest of the Lux-SUV pack hasnt caught up. I promise you folks, there is NOTHING else on the market in 2004 that has the performance AND high tech gadgetry of this 2002 model.

Great vehical with a great pickup and great interior. Our only concern is that it has a rough ride compared to the Lexus RX 300 which we own.

  • Should have bought the Wagon - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

Nothing but problems. Great concept but pretty poor quality. I bought this with the understanding that quality issues were resolved, unfortunately (for me amd MB) not the case.

  • Great Car - 2002 Mercedes-Benz M-Class

I tested the Lexus RX300 (lacking power) and LX470 (too big), Cadillac Escalade (for sports stars and rappers) and Acura MDX (cheap interior; sluggish). None of those cars could compare to the ML500. I love the navigation, comfort and all of the amenities. Great car. No rattles and no regrets.
