Model Overview:

A favorite in the midsize luxury car class, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has provided an appealing mix of comfort, performance and safety for decades. The trademark qualities of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, such as vaultlike solidity and cutting-edge technology, have also contributed to the E-Class' great popularity among luxury buyers.

Over the years, the E-Class has been offered as a sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible. Contemporary E-Class models come loaded with luxury features and offer stunning acceleration in higher trim levels, with diesel power available if you want to maximize your fuel economy. The E-Class has never been the sportiest car in its segment, but its handling has improved significantly in recent years. Rivals are better in certain respects, but if you're looking for the complete package in a medium-size luxury car, an E-Class will be hard to beat.

  • great engine horrid HVAC - 1995 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The twin-cam straight six has always been a great engine, and the variable cam version has to rate as one of MBs best engines. It pulls like a V8 and roars when told to do so. The engine is also bullet proof, as is the transmission, brakes, and suspension. All work like new after 112k miles. BUT, the car is best suited to milder climates -- like San Fran -- because the HVAC is total crap. Ive lost heat in the winter and seldom had cold air in the summer, despite spending lots and lots of money on constant repairs. The locks are also a weak spot.

  • Much better than the last model - 2004 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

After a disasterous 2000 E Class wagon (windshield leak, ox sensor fault, aircon breakdown...), this one seems much better put together and of much higher quality. The dark grey exterior is striking while the interior is much improved. I acutally think the wagon looks better than the sedan. They might have got it right this time.

  • $45K car for 55K (MSRP) - 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Not up to M-Bs reputation. Nice enough car; ride is not good at low speeds over any road imperfections. Nice at highway speeds. Per M-B and dealer, this is normal. Have to accelerate more going up hill, etc. due to inadequate engine which causes more fuel use. Lumbar is hard to adjust. Hood release hard to find. Underside of parcel shelf in trunk is not covered. Have to jerk spare tire cover out and force it back in. Wiper control hidden by steering sheel spoke making it easy to leave in auto mode. Results in wiper damage in car washes. Carpet and mats are thin compared to even medium priced competitors. Storage box on front of front seats hits back of legs. Interior is well done.

This is a wonderful machine in terms of handling. It is eye pleasing and driving fatigue on long trips is zero. But, it is an electrical NIGHTMARE. Dont waste your money underwriting mercedez R&D. I know the company knows of the drastic electrical problems yet they keep offering the cars for sell without warning. This is not like the Mercedez of old. Hey...who owns this company these days...certainly not a company that cares about the consumer. In 16 months my car has been in the shop more than 10 times for major electrical problems. I think more consumers arent complaining because they are embarassed to tell that a car with this reputation is soo poor.

  • Sad state of MB - 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

I bought E430 new and it was running well for about two years. Starting in 3rd years, it was having all sorts of problems. CD changer wont work, fuel gauge went out, AC is leaking, transmission is leaking, seat adjuster wont work, plus many more. This will be my last MB and probably my last German made car.

bought this car with 55800 miles. The interior is very comfortable and stylish. The car is somewhat heavy but the engine has good power. I consistently get 21 city and 29 highway when on cruise control. The looks are ok but the newer models are now better. As far as reliability it has served me well. It goes 10k miles between oil changes. I do take care of car and do not drive it aggressively. It is a cruiser not a racecar. The feeling behind wheel is not great because it is too comfortable and big. Overall is a good car. Keep regular maintenance take care of it. Repairs can be pricey but you do get what you pay or dont pay for.

overall love this car. minor issues, some interior controls/switches feel very cheap. seats could use a little bit of overall upgrade.

  • Starting to rethink this purchase - 2004 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

Ive had the car for 6 months, purchased 2nd hand without a warranty. Air system is already giving problems to the tune of $2300. That is the cost of one strut and one air compressor. While licking my wounds from this event, I may purchase an extended warranty and keep the car for my wifes sake or get rid of it and get a 5 series BMW, what I should have bought in the first place. Im just an average Joe with a love for German cars but who can afford repairs like this? No matter who you are.
