Model Overview:

A favorite in the midsize luxury car class, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has provided an appealing mix of comfort, performance and safety for decades. The trademark qualities of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, such as vaultlike solidity and cutting-edge technology, have also contributed to the E-Class' great popularity among luxury buyers.

Over the years, the E-Class has been offered as a sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible. Contemporary E-Class models come loaded with luxury features and offer stunning acceleration in higher trim levels, with diesel power available if you want to maximize your fuel economy. The E-Class has never been the sportiest car in its segment, but its handling has improved significantly in recent years. Rivals are better in certain respects, but if you're looking for the complete package in a medium-size luxury car, an E-Class will be hard to beat.

  • AWESOME - GAS GUZZLER - 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Awesome handling around the corners; great acceleration; quiet and smooth yet sporty ride; interior well-designed for ease of operation; looks great (sport package); guzzles gas (about 15MPG combined!). Opt for the 320 if MPG is important.

  • Not that bad for a 10 year old car - 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Okay, I read a lot of complaints about this car, but its not really that bad if you take care of it. Maintenance costs are fairly high if you dont know how to do simple maintenance yourself. Its not only the labor that is expensive if you have to bring it in, its also the parts. The best fuel economy Ive gotten on this tank is 27mpg driving from Minneapolis to Chicago in the summer. If youre trying to be frugal, dont buy this car. Otherwise, I pray every day that nothing breaks on it. Meanwhile, I really enjoy driving this E320 4matic. Just take good care of it, do all the maintenance in advance and itll run fine.

  • Disappointed - 2004 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

After driving a 2000 wagon for 4 years and loving it I ordered a "new" 2004 wagon only to find the interior passenger room much smaller, the second row of seats are not as roomy, knee room tighter, the headroom seems to be lower, the 3rd row jump seat lost 5 inches head room due to the spare under the seat. I did not accept the car. I have been driving a Mercedes for over 40 years.

Loved the appearance of as the new E Class. Test drove the car in Florida where the roads are relatively flat and in good condition. Drove the car to the Midwest where roads are rough. Liked the ride in Fl, dislike the ride in WI. Suspension too stiff on the sport and frankly very noisy on bumpy roads. Tires may be a factor. Liked my C300 ride better! MB must change the suspension or lose customers in the future. I have a three year lease but will try to trade out come fall. Our second car is a 2010 Passat. I rather drive the Passat. Better ride at half the price. Go Figure.

  • Expensive with Chrysler Quality - 2001 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

I have owned this car for just under 3 years. Next week it goes back in again for service, I have a total of 18 defectives, more than 3 other cars combined over 10 years. I think Mercedes has recreated the electrical system problems that Jaguar was known for in the past...... This car needs to be sold before the warranty ends. My impression is Mercedes does not care.

  • If only... - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

This car is a dream to drive and a nightmare to own. The cars basic mechanical functions have been flawless but its electronics and audio system are so buggy I need to hire an exterminator. Car has been in shop regularly and MB can not yet give me an audio system that works. They dont know how to fix the problems, by their own admission. $72K total out the door and now I know everyone at the service departments birthdays, anniversaries and pets names. Thanks MB.

  • First Mercedes (and wont be my last) - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

My wife and I test drove a new one in 2001 and came away impressed but plumped for a (cheaper) Volvo Cross Country (since sold) instead. In the summer of 2008 I began searching for a clean used 2001-2003 E320 wagon I could park at our vacation home. Eventually I found a pre-CPO car in the rare Pewter/Oyster combination (only available in 2003) which I wasnt entirely sure about at first but have since grown to love. I have now owned the car for 9 months and Im very satisfied with my purchase and should I ever decide to sell I expect to recoup most of my (not considerable) outlay for this unexpected headturner.

  • Get ready for headaches!!! - 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

extremely frustrated . I have had annoying problems ever since buying. Passenger side mirror popped out when a child brushed with a knapsack. Had to have an entire new unit. new retaining clip would have worked. Pneumatic seat controls went with a $700 repair quote. Driving light bulb had to be replaced requiring a lift to get the car high enough to remove panels. Single windshield wiper is a royal pain. If there is not quite enough water on the window, the wiper skips across. A couple of hours of that will make you put a gun in your mouth!

  • Front Legroom - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The E320 is a well made and fun to drive car. It has more power than its E class predecessors, and the electronics are excellent

  • Balance shaft - MBZ does not stand behind - 2013 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

Great car, comfortable and great value. BUT be careful, as Mercedes does not stands behind their products. I have a MBZ E350, and at 63K, I got a check engine problem that required a balance shaft to be changed at the cost of $6K, because of a shaft that was not properly tempered. MBZ clearly built a product that was flawed, as about 20% of the cars that has the E350 engine had the problem. BUT they leaved us poor users to deal with it, and didnt stand behind their poor craftmaship product.
