Model Overview:

A favorite in the midsize luxury car class, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has provided an appealing mix of comfort, performance and safety for decades. The trademark qualities of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, such as vaultlike solidity and cutting-edge technology, have also contributed to the E-Class' great popularity among luxury buyers.

Over the years, the E-Class has been offered as a sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible. Contemporary E-Class models come loaded with luxury features and offer stunning acceleration in higher trim levels, with diesel power available if you want to maximize your fuel economy. The E-Class has never been the sportiest car in its segment, but its handling has improved significantly in recent years. Rivals are better in certain respects, but if you're looking for the complete package in a medium-size luxury car, an E-Class will be hard to beat.

  • Great Gas Mileage - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

I love my Mercedes for its mileage - I continue to get up to 30.7 miles per gallon and Ive owned the car for 3 years - it now has 27,000 miles on it. We recently took a driving vacation trip, starting I-66 W through the Blue Ridge then Great Spoky Mountains - Alex., VA to Sevierville, then Oak Ridge & Chantanooga, TN, then to Cherokee and Ashville, NC then back home to Upper Marlboro, MD via I-95 N. This car drove like a sports car around & over the mountains - huged the road, took curves, the exception-ally smooth & accurate breaking made this car an absolute joy to drive - my husband, who does not like my "soft" car (he wanted me to buy a BMW 530), would not let me at the wheel.

  • Should be better - 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Like the car, but should have more at the price, even when discounted heavily. Even the comfort suspension on E350 Luxury has too much impact harshness over most road imperfections and too little damping, especially at low speeds. Navigation and Audio are too complicated. No cover on underside of parcel shelf in trunk, making it looks cheap. Spare tire cover has to be FORCED in and out with great effort- poor design. Carpet & mats are thin, even compared to economy makes. Engine is underpowered which causes using more fuel to accelerate or go uphill. Seat heater cuts off after 10-20 minutes and has to be re-started. Storage box on front of seats hits back of legs. Hood release is hard to find.

  • Best value car, time saver - 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

I have driven this vehicle new for 3 years (45,000 miles), I had to take it back to a dealer 6 times. 3 regular maintenance (oil change every 12,000 miles), 1 temp sensor flaky, 1 oxygen sensor replacement (kept giving engine fault error) 1 bulb burn out. Other than 3 oil changes I did not have to pay a penny (including the burned out bulb, Mercedes paid for it.) It drives like a dream (very quiet, just glides, not a grinding engine or bearing sound. I believe, it is the best value car.

  • Not as good as advertised - 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

The MB television ads for the 9th generation E class said they put everything the knew into this car. They must have lost a lot of knowledge dealing with Chrysler. The car is sluggish, the transmission shifts to slowly for the paddle shifters to be of any use, the exterior design looks stolen from the Accord, Sonata and Genesis. I bot the car 7 weeks ago, have about 3100 miles on it and already 3 trips to the dealer for "fixes" (not what I expected at all). I also didnt expect such poor gas mileage (17/23) when I got 19/26 with my Lexus 430 V8. The MB-Tex seats are horrible; leather covering should be standard, as should tilting & fold in outside rear view mirrors. E is overrated, alot.

  • Avoiding Pot Holes and Manhole Covers - 2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

My wife loves this car and is her main form of transportation. I leased this car primarily because of all the advanced technology and was concerned that maybe there would be lots of maintenance issues. None so far, but to my surprise the run flat tire system got my attention--no spare! Prior to leasing I drove the car up and down the freeway that was close by and the ride was as expected. I did not look in the trunk and had no idea there wasnt a spare. (Ive owned E350s for 30 years and never was there not a spare.) Living in San Diego county you get used to driving on roads with pot holes and when you hit one with this car it is really jarring and even though the car was probably engineered for these tires, there is a marked suspension bounce and a slight bit of skipping if you happen to be in a turn. You feel EVERY bump in the road with the run flats. (I also purchased a battery operated tire inflator just in case the pressure ever drops on the tires when Im traveling in the hinterland as you are only guaranteed 50 miles running flat. Research indicates you may even have to replace the tire, which are very expensive and according to reviews are somewhat hard to find, and in worst case you wipe our the rim too--really expensive.) It is very obvious that a lot of effort has been made to reduce the weight of the car by eliminating some enhancements that used to be on the 2014. I have had almost zero maintenance issues in the 3000 miles the car has been driven, the only one is that the trunk lid does not spring fully open as it did when new causing a few head bumps. Otherwise we are very pleased with this machine--plenty of horsepower for us (85 years and counting). The ambient lighting, massaging seats, USB/Phone capability all are very pleasing. Wished they had stayed with the same navigation software as the 2014. Yes, the seats could be fully covered as before, but again that is probably a weight thing. Have not yet decided if I would purchase this car primarily due to my issues with the run flats.

Unassuming power with effortless acceleration. Its sleek and comfortable enough to drive daily, but it can fly whenever you want. Its only a matter of time before my first speeding ticket.

  • Driving feel being lost among electronics - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

This is my 3rd MB. Owned an E500 4m for a year, and decided to sell. First the good news, the car was totally reliable and finely finished inside and out, but a few months of driving revealed a series of irritations that added up. Theres throttle lag in this model, and brakes are hard to modulate due to the SBC. The steering power assist at lo speed is non existent, and at any speed the wheel needs constant input to stay on line. The airmatic works well at speed in corners and to isolate cabin, but go over a bump at lo speed and your head will bob. My old E430 4m felt roomier and easier to drive in suburbia and city. This car is engineered to compete with BMW in autobahn conditions, not on Long Island.

  • Still love my E320AWD - 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

We have owned our e320 awd since it was new. It has been a phenomenal car. It is by far the best car we have ever had in the snow (especially w snow tires). Not sporty by any stretch - but extremely reliable. We have just under 100k miles on it -- just took it on a road trip for the weekend. Drove like new. There are some great mechanical shops in queens that are actually better than the dealer service depts and 1/3 the price. This car is a keeper even at 100k miles.

  • Unreliable - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

I am waiting for a tow truck to pick up my E500 again as I write thie review. This is an awesome driving car, with great looks and lots of power, but man have I been in the shop way too much. This time the air suspension went out (again) and the extended warranty plan doesnt cover this as its considered a shock, so there goes $1000. Previous problems included the radiator split, causing the transmission cooling lines that run through it to get coolant mixed in with my transmission fluid, which means the tranny was replaced.

  • E420 Review - 1997 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

I bought this car used, with extra low milage, from an owner in Italy. Although I was never a MB nut, I can see why people love the brand. It is, for a 13 year old car, a step above most cars that are supposedly younger, better etc. and cost the same if not more. While reliability is an issue in the W210s, you cant expect a 13 year old car to be flawless or not experience any mechanical failures from wear and tear. From my research, the W210s are the last of the proper German engineered and assembled MBs (some say the W124s were the last such breed). If you are planning on buying a used W210, especially the E420, take it to an honest MB dealer and get it thoroughly checked. Then enjoy.
