Model Overview:

A favorite in the midsize luxury car class, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has provided an appealing mix of comfort, performance and safety for decades. The trademark qualities of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, such as vaultlike solidity and cutting-edge technology, have also contributed to the E-Class' great popularity among luxury buyers.

Over the years, the E-Class has been offered as a sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible. Contemporary E-Class models come loaded with luxury features and offer stunning acceleration in higher trim levels, with diesel power available if you want to maximize your fuel economy. The E-Class has never been the sportiest car in its segment, but its handling has improved significantly in recent years. Rivals are better in certain respects, but if you're looking for the complete package in a medium-size luxury car, an E-Class will be hard to beat.

  • Disappointed - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

Car pulled to the right from day of delivery.Temperature display died a few days after delivery and it took weeks and multiple visits to fix. Currently having multiple electrical problems with sunroof, tilt wheel etc. And what is with that front end chatter.

  • Change your transmission oil! - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

I really loved having this car, but now I am told that I need a new transmission. I drive a lot, which is why I got the diesel. One time I got 40 miles per gallon on a trip to the shore! I brought the car in religiously for service which is why I was so shocked that my tranz needed replacement. Transmission oil is not listed to be changed at intervals like regular oil. I wish I changed it at 80K because then I would not have been writing this review. Learn from my mistake. Change the tranny oil.

  • Glitches - 1999 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

This is a fabuluos reliable car. Its glitches are that it goes through lights quite often and the heating thermostat is never very good. You never know when your heater will freeze you or roast you. When its really cold, the heater is weak. Von Housen becomes less interested in your car care as the car ages.

  • Buyer Beware - 2004 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

My 2004 E55 has been the worst car experience I have ever encoutered. On the day I took delivery, the Command system malfunctioned and stopped working. In addition, the rim was scratched and the homelink system was inoperative. It has been in the service department for a total of 2 weeks since I took delivery a month ago. MB USA has been totally unsympathetic and uncaring for a car that cost me $100k. I have left several customer concerns that were never followed up. My recommedation is to avoid this car and Mercedes Benz.

  • One Nice Car - 2006 Mercedes-Benz E-Class

I drive more than I used to in my 1999 E series, or my 1987 RX7 (a great handling car). I seek out the windy roads.

  • Joy to drive, but painful to service. - 1998 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

Inherited this car while under warranty. This car has beautiful lines, a comfortable interior, and sensational performance. I love to drive it, and I will miss it in three days, when the new owner takes possession...sniffle, sniffle. However, having owned Nissans and Toyotas prior to this vehicle, I have to say, the reliability on this car...not so good. We have had $4,600 of repairs since 2001, mostly electrical, frequently involving window motors - and the car only has 70k. Further, we had to have rear car- seat tethering mounts installed - very expensive on something that should be standard. Electrical issues/ $ repairs outweighed road performance; we switched to an Infiniti.

  • E-500 - 2003 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

My E-500 has been in the shop 5 weeks out of the last 52 weeks for radio, telephone problems and to replace windshield and rear glass due to scratches at delivery. The shop then scratched the paint and it had to be repaired. I think theyve finally solved the radio/telephone problems just last week. Otherwise, the performance of the engine and comfort ride are great.

  • alerts - 2000 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

The car is beautiful and a real eye catcher. Fit and finish are top quality. However, since three months into ownership I have been plagued with false/positive alerts for brakes, coolant, and the auto climate control is hit or miss. In addition, my radio lcd display blanks out and above all if I dont shift into N or P after R, the transmission winds out and bangs into lower gear. This causes me to have to pull over and either re-shift into N or P or restart the car. Once the car is restarted, all systems return to normal. The dealer hasnt been able to correct and I am demanding an open-ended warranty or new car.

  • Very solid vehicle - 1995 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

I bought this car with 117,000 mi and it now has 150,000 mi. This is my first MB after Volvos, Saabs, Fords. These cars are engineered very well but that means that everything that can go wrong or wear out has a sensor attached to it, and it can be frustrating troubleshooting problems. Im a DIYer and if you are looking for a used trouble free car do not buy a MB. This is a very solid car and excellent in the snow and gas mileage is very good. It also rides beautifully. Do not buy an E class after 1995, they went downhill after that year. If you do buy used try to get an independent mechanic because the stealerships are a real hassle. They think if you drive a MB you are rich.

  • Not as impressed - 2005 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
    By -

I went from an Audi S4 to my E55 and have to say I am really disappointed with the MB. It is a great car, fast as can be but doesnt compare with the Audi. The handling and build quality of the MB arent up to the Audi standards which was a let down.
