Overview & Reviews
Mazda's first sport-utility vehicle since the departure of the Navajo half a decade ago, the Tribute combines car-like ride and handling with the ability to go in the snow and tote up to five passengers and a healthy amount of their luggage. With the most powerful V6 in its class, in addition to handsome looks and a spacious cabin, the Tribute should find huge success despite an increasingly crowded small-SUV marketplace.
- Stout V6 power, rugged good looks, roomy cabin, attractive pricing.
- Weak standard four-cylinder engine, no low-range transfer case.

Love my Tribute - 2001 Mazda Tribute
By Morgan Lover - January 23 - 8:06 pmI bought this vehicle when it was one year old and had 7,000 miles in it. It now has 63,000. It has provided an excellent, FUN driving experience. No problems and it still drives like it did the first day. This is the first car I have owned that wasnt a sports car so I do "drive" and the Tribute is a blast. Stll have the original Michelins on her!!! I change the oil and filter every 3,500 miles, rotate the tires every other oil change, do the other maintenance by the book, and NO problems yet, not even when it was under warranty. I get 18 mpg in the city, up to 22 on the Interstate depending on velocity. Thinking of trading...but why should I?

Awesome...but.... - 2001 Mazda Tribute
By andrewcaudillo - December 1 - 5:44 amI love my Mazda, I really do. But after 10 years of babying, I feel that it should fare better than it is. We bought it brand new in late 2000. It looked incredible then, and it still does. However, there are a few issues: 1) (minor) the fabric panelling on the doors is falling off. ($20 fix) 2) (minor) The headlights are all fogged up ($15 fix) 3) (major) The PLASTIC intake manifold gasket has gone bad ($1000 fix) Would I buy another one? Mmm...probably not. Im driving a 2001 Toyota Camry LE (4 cyl) while the Mazdas in the shop, and though it doesnt look as good, drive as well, or sound as awesome, it hasnt given my grandparents a single issue... Ill buy a VW or Toyota next time

I still love my 2001 Tribute - 2001 Mazda Tribute
By Cary - September 2 - 8:10 pmIve been meaning to submit a report since 2001... I love this car. It has enough power to merge and pass safely on the highway, enough cargo space to haul a gardens worth of plants & mulch with the option of opening just the back window for extra-long items, the seats are comfortable on 8 hour drives and I still feel happy when I see its graceful profile in the parking lot, especially next to bigger, clunkier SUVs. I bought it new, and put over 120,000 miles on it. It still feels like my "new" car. Unfortunately, it crashed last week (no fault of the Tribute), so here I am, looking for another just like it. That says it all: would I buy it again? Yes!

Reliable, solid and a blast to drive - 2001 Mazda Tribute
By bill-l - August 28 - 10:00 amI love my Tribute--Ive had it nearly a year, and have had no significant problems. It has great handling, acceleration and braking for an SUV, and I love the exterior looks and the interior comfort. The ride is smoother than any other SUV I test drove or have ever ridden in. You can keep your $75,000 Hummers--When Im driving in my Tribute, Im King of the Road--for 1/3rd the price! Zoom Zoom!!

Thinking of buying another one - 2001 Mazda Tribute
By LoveMyTribute - August 23 - 10:00 amWe bought our Tribute last year. I checked out other SUVs and none compared to the Tribute. The Tribute had a lot more standard features along with better horsepower, looks, and space. It was too good to pass up! I traded in my MX-3 for the Tribute and still have lots of fun driving. Weve had this car for 1.5 years now and have put on 25,400 miles on it. We havent had any problems with our Tribute. Were thinking of getting a second Tribute. It has excellent pick up too, I often pass other cars at intersections without any extra pressure on the gas pedal!

Fun Zoom Zoom - 2001 Mazda Tribute
By Doubear - August 23 - 10:00 amIt is amazing how much power can be produced out of such a relatively small engine. Im an old gearhead and we thought we were doing well at 1 horsepower per cubic inch. This engine is far above that and gets fair gas milage as well. Bravo to the Ford or combination of engineers that designed this engine and automobile. My only complaint is interior road noise is too high

Not built for the long haul.... - 2001 Mazda Tribute
By Pitt Fan - August 16 - 2:00 amGreat vehicle, but Im starting to think it isnt built for the long haul. I recently had the dealership perform a transmission adjustment to eliminate an occasional "rumble strip" noise that would randomly occur in the 40-50 MPH range. They said theyre getting about 4-5 of these problems per month! Ive also noticed the mileage is getting worse. I was getting about 20mpg with combined city/highway. Now Im down to about 17, which STINKS.
