This Year's Model Updates:

The MPV has been completely redesigned from top to bottom. Several unique features, like hinged rear doors and all-wheel drive, have disappeared. At the same time, items like roll-down windows in the sliding doors and tailgate seating in the third-row seats certify the MPV as a standout vehicle.

Pros:
  • Some innovative features, excellent road feel and driving position, optional sound system rocks.
Cons:
  • Weak and unrefined drivetrain, not as roomy as Grand Caravan, Odyssey or Windstar.

For 3 kids under 10, this has been a good car. We have had it for 3 years. Many interior features make long trips easy. We have done some 1200 mi. in one day trips w/all 3 kids. Not really a lot of fun to drive, but moves people well and it was about $4,000 less than the Odyssey & Sienna and about the same price as a domestic. Interior easily configures by wife. No moving 60 pound seats. Havent had any serious mechanical problems except the front suspension after the wife ran into a curb.

  • Transmission Failed - 2000 Mazda MPV

I have been driving this car since the start of 2001. Overall it has been solid and has required only basic or required minimal repairs... until now. At only 80,000 miles the transmission has completely failed. This will cost over $3,000 to repair, more than 1/2 the value of the car. Mechanics seem surprised, but say it is a closed system, and if it goes... well it just goes. This is a real bummer and has really turned me off on this car.

  • Expect the worst and it will happen - 2000 Mazda MPV

Weve owned this MPV for a few years, got it for less than blue book from a private party. Recently (at about 80k miles) some things started going wrong - both manifolds, water pump, oil pump, timing chain, pcv, and many electrical problems. Both the passenger front door and one sliding door have electrical/mechanical malfunctions (one only opens from the inside, the other only from the outside). In short, a wide variety of mechanical, electrical, and engine problems that are very expensive to repair - about double the actual value of the vehicle at this point. None of them fall under "routine maintenance." Advice: steer clear of Mazda vans of this vintage.

  • Dont buy a Mazda. Buy American. - 2000 Mazda MPV

When we bought the Mazda, we thought it was like a Toyota. Will keep running and running. Wrong, wrong, wrong! We have had it towed to a local garage because it just would not start. The garage tried to just get a design for the motor so they could make sure everything was where it was supposed to be. Mazda would send them a design if they would pay $169.00. Had it towed to a dealership, thought it was fixed. Ran hot on us when we went out of town for my sons state track meet. It was 100 degrees and when the mazdas run hot, the air does not work. It is not recommended for the south. We did not even make it home, our other son had to come and get us 30 miles away from our home.

This is our first minivan, weve had it for 5 years with minimal problems. One thing I really dislike is that a lot of the parts are made cheaply and have broken with normal use. The handles on both my rear sliding door simply broke off in my hand when opening the door. Also, the plastic clip that holds the sunflap up has broken on both sides, and the console hinge opens sometimes when driving. These parts are all made of plastic, and I wonder why they have broken... I have never heard of another vehicle with two door handles breaking off like that. Needless to say, they are extremely expensive to fix, as have been most of the seemingly simple repairs on this vehicle.

for the price it is a good choice among Toyota and Honda. At 37000 miles check engine light came on and needs to replace spark plugs and wire at the cost of $340.00. Dealership did a crappy job and insist that this is not covered in Mazda warranty!!!

Great vehicle large enough for a family of five. Ease of use, flexible vehicle.

My wife and I both stand by our decision to go with the MPV. It was a bit tough, given that it was the first year for the design, but it would appear that we made the right choice. I dont feel like Im driving a minivan when I take the MPV somewhere. A great sound system and great manuverability allow me to forget that Ive got two car seats and a weeks worth of groceries behind me.

I had driven several mimivans and hated the way they all drove. I decided to stay with a station wagon until I drove the MPV. I love it! Its roomy, fun to drive and has to be sturdy with my three children. Although it is not a performance vehicle, I didnt need one, I needed a reliable form of transportation that would stand up to the test of rowdy children and thats what I got.
