This Year's Model Updates:

The Jeep Liberty gets stability control as standard equipment on all models for 2006. The four-cylinder gas engine has been dropped, however, due to a lack of consumer interest.

Pros:
  • Extremely capable off-road, economical diesel engine option, creative interior design.
Cons:
  • V6 is rather thirsty at the pump, not as "carlike" on the street as most of its competitors.

  • Jury still out - 2006 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I have submitted an earlier rating, "My Jury is still out". That was with 1000 miles. My main concern was MPG in my new Diesel, about 20. Its gotten worse after 3000 miles, 18. I am a very conservative driver with 80% of of my driving highway. I am returning the car to the dealer with instructions to check out the engine and transmission. In order to shift into the top gear I have to run the car up to 65 and then coast back to the desired speed. I spend more time watching the tach than the speedo. I hope the dealer can do something because I enjoy driving the car. The main reason for me purchasing the diesel was for the fuel economy.

  • Never Buy Another One - 2006 Jeep Liberty

I probably wont buy any Chrysler product again. The windows of this Jeep have been fixed 5 times, (I see many other people have the same problem) and the car only has 15,000 miles on it. The panel for adjusting the mirrors keeps falling inside the door panel and has to be fished out. The dealership is good about fixing the windows, but what happens when the warranty runs out? The Jeep handles well on the road, the stabilizing feature works well, and overall I like driving it. This was my first American made car in years, (I have had VW, Nissan and Hyundai) but I am very disappointed in the craftsmanship of the quality of the Jeep.

So, I have had this Jeep for 4 months now. Runs okay, no major defects. However, I am getting 13.3 MPG. My low fuel light or chime does not work. Loses power and does not shift correctly when putting strain on Jeep , like going uphill. Took it to dealer, and they naturally found no problem. The dealer told me as far as the low fuel light not coming on, "You have a fuel guage dont you?" I told him yes, and he said that I must have more reserve fuel than what I thought. So I went to fuel up. I put 18.5 gallons in. That chime and low fuel light should have worked. In my opinion, there are better SUVs out there. MPG on sticker is no where near the actual MPG that you get.

  • My jury is still out - 2006 Jeep Liberty

I upgraded from a 2002 2wd Sport Liberty to a 2006 Sport CRD. I love the diesel. The vehicle is a breeze in traffic and parking. Not bad on the highway. After all, its a small car with large guts, heavy. Good storage with the back seats down. The dash is laid out well. Best looking compact SUV on the road. My previous 3.7 Sport delivered 17, plus or minus, MPG for 4 years. I am a bit concerned, however, with the CRD. So far, 1000 miles, I am achieving 20 MPG. I love the power and smoothness of the CRD over the 3.7, but my jury is still out as to "was it worth the upcharge?". As the motor "breaks in" I will keep you posted.

  • Minor cons But the Pros outweigh con - 2006 Jeep Liberty

I purchased a 2006 and it is has turned me a true jeep fan the power is great and you cant complain about gas mileage when you have great power. Smooth ride overall.

  • Great Car, Bad Mileage - 2006 Jeep Liberty
    By -

The car is a great everyday car, especially for commuting around town. I love to park with this car because it will easily pop over barriers and curbs with relative ease. The seats, although not leather, are extremely comfortable and easy to slide on due to the high quality fabric. The engine power is great, I just wish the mileage was something over 16 MPG, and I am not a crazy "off-the-line" driver.

This is a nice little suv that is affordable. Tthis is a bigger v6 so it is a little thirsty at the pump. I found that if you get gas before it is below 1/2 tank it does not hurt your wallet too bad. It is a nice little truck to drive though and it has nice pickup.

  • I miss my Jeep! - 2006 Jeep Liberty

I LOVED this SUV - just totaled it and Im not sure what to do next. I had no problems at all with my car. The mileage was annoying, but better than my big van. It was a comfortable and peppy ride, lots of fun to drive under any conditions. Spend the extra money for the leather seats. Buffetting noise was an issue, but often is a problem in SUVs. I had no mechanical issues at all - just changed the oil and that was about it. My ownership was brief - 2 years - but it was great. Oh - the airbag deployed with force - broke my wrist - but I had no other injuries.

  • I have Issues - 2006 Jeep Liberty

I very seldom put the back window down or up and the driver side rear window has already been replaced because it would not stay up. The seat cover is so bad to stain even water will leave a spot. Now I am hearing a loud noise from the rear end and was told that people are having to replace the rear end and that all the dealer wants to do is change fluids until the warranty in gone then the rear end has to be replaced. This is not good. Has any one else had a problem with the rear end going out on the Jeep Liberty?

  • Definately Rethinking... - 2006 Jeep Liberty
    By -

I am seriously rethinking purchasing this car. Within 50 of pulling out of the parking lot the check engine light came on. I made arrangements to turn it in the next day and before I could even get to the dealership I found two other flaws. The front passenger window was out of track (working but doesnt go up evenly leaving a crack at the top) and the drivers side rear outside door handle had separated from the door by about a quarter inch. Turns out it was the check engine light was for the catalytic converter. While the warranty covers the converter it does not include the door handle or the window. This is a used car that was a leaser with only two owners and 38000 miles when I bought it
