Model Overview:

Crossovers with carlike ride and handling characteristics are perennially popular, and a good example of the breed is the smart-looking Ford Edge. It's a midsize crossover with seating for five. Thanks to its roomy interior, long list of amenities and available all-wheel drive, it's typically a good match for small- and medium-size families seeking a do-it-all utility vehicle.

In road tests, our editors have praised the Edge's quiet ride and advanced features like the MyFord Touch electronics interface, though as with most modern, in-car technology, there's a learning curve. Additionally, Ford offers a range of different engines in the Edge to appeal to crossover buyers seeking performance, fuel economy or a balance of both. Although the Ford Edge might not appeal to bigger families in need of high passenger capacity, it's a solid contender in most other respects.

We have had this vehicle for around three weeks now. We brought a 2007 for the incentives and had an "A" plan, that made the price hard to beat. Problem is, we are averaging 14.1 mpg. My wife drives the car to work M-F 15 miles highway driving. We have asked other Edge owners what their average MPG is and the normal response is "20 - 25." Also, window wipers freeze up and make the blades useless. Where they are located is a collection area for rain and snow. Not very well thought out. Would strongly advise looking at other crossovers as this one cost more in gas than a Suburban would!

We purchased a 2013 EDGE SEL 4wd with 38,000 miles on it and it appeared to be in mint condition. Several months later, I noticed that one of the rubber door gaskets was twisted out of position, and could not be reinserted so we had to have it replaced. Several months later, another gasket detached from the drivers door when I grabbed the top portion of the door, although it was easily put back in position. Ive owned 15 cars in my lifetime and never had a SINGLE door gasket fail. When test driving our Edge, I had not noticed how the doors close with a clank, unlike my sons 2014 Corolla that close with a "THUD." Im no engineer, but all four the doors seem kind of flimsy for a nearly $40k retail vehicle. I dont care for the rear bumper top surface, which on many SUVs (including my Hyundai Santa Fe) have a black protective plastic shield. I already have a have dozen scratches and dings in the bumpers pearl white paint from normal wear. Ill look into an after market protector. The transmission shifts strangely from a stop into first gear, or when downshifting from first, as it kind of slams into gear, which doesnt inspire confidence so Im glad I bought an extended warranty. Although I will bring it in to have it checked out, but in my experience with other vehicles with the same kind of problem, it usually doesnt show up as an error code... Road noise on the highway is higher than I would have expected, which could be the factory Michelin tires. Ill have to have them inspected but Im not confident they will find anything. Seating and visibility are excellent, and interior materials seem to be of good quality. When braking, the EDGE doesnt slow down smoothly as other vehicles Ive owned. I have to apply more brake pressure than Im used to, and the Edge kind of stops abruptly. Thats probably my biggest complaint, so again I have to bring it to the shop to have it looked at. The rotors were replaced at no cost to me a week after we bought the vehicle, as they were found to be rusted and noisy, but the dealer should also have replaced the pads too but did not. I dont like the USB ports hidden in the center armrest. If the road noise were less and the brakes operated more smoothly, Id be a lot happier with this EDGE.

Beware of the the water pump on the 3.5L engine. Search the internet lots of water pump failures resulting in severe engine damage. I loved this car. I purchased it new, no problems until 92K when the water pump failed with no warning. No warning lights, no fluid leaks. If youre thinking of buying one used with a 3.5L, be sure to have the water pump checked out first.

My particular Edge gave me problems in acceleration (an annoying delay), and if I slowed down and then accelerated it would slam into gear.

  • Not What I Expected - 2017 Ford Edge

I rented this car for a week and drove it 300 miles in combined highway and city driving. I own an Acura MDX that is a few years old and have been thinking of buying a new car. One that I have considered is the Edge. After driving the Edge Titanium for a week, I find that there are some good and bad aspects to the Edge. The good is that the car seems well made and has a nicely appointed interior. Interior controls are easy to learn and to use. The navi system works well and has a nice large screen. Performance is OK, but acceleration is not particularly quick. I noticed two things that I really did not like. One was visibility out of the car to the front and over the hood and the top front quarter when turning. Compared to the MDX, the hood seems inordinately high and one feels like one is staring out over a very deep dash and long hood from a big, heavy vehicle. The other aspect of this is that the A pillars seem set back too close to the driving position and they noticeably block vision forward and make it harder to see when turning corners. One cannot see a curb or lane marker stripes when turning around a corner (like driving into a driveup lane at Starbucks or just turning on a street) and this gives a sense that you cannot tell where you are turning on the road. The other noticeable thing about the Edge is that it feels ponderously heavy when driving in city traffic. By that I mean that just moving lane to lane feels like one is moving a much larger, heavier vehicle that this SUV really is. The Acura, on the other hand has excellent visibility out the front and drives like a car, although it is a larger vehicle than the Edge. The only way that I can describe it is that it is mega times lighter on its feet and you can see out of it. In my opinion, the Edge is a nice overall package, but the limitations I experienced eliminate it from ownership by me.

  • Less than crisp handling, but lots of space... - 2013 Ford Edge

We bought a used 2013 Edge six months ago and I have to say, its not the best handling vehicle Ive ever driven. There isnt a whole lot of road feel, as it feels that Im sort of just pointing the Edge in a particular direction. The cabin is pretty quiet, but road noise intrudes to a moderate degree. Im not sure if its the Michelin Latitude tires or something else. Overall ride is quite good, but can instantly be upset by road defects such as potholes. You get a rather "jarring" effect. Driver and passenger comfort are a plus, esp. with the electric seats. Rear seating is comfortable as well and theres lots of room and lots of storage/hauling space. The gauges are pretty easy to read. There is a big learning curve with the navigation system, which can be very frustrating. Theres also a learning curve for the heat/vent/air conditioning controls.. It took my a while to figure it all out. I imagine these controls as well as the often frustrating nav system would have been redesigned in later models... And if you have a hard time seeing at night, the headlights are a weakness in my opinion. I find I have to keep on my high beams on dark, back roads to see properly. Mileage combined is around 22.5, and on long highway trips its around 25 or so - if you are easy on the pedal.

  • A dull Edge - 2007 Ford Edge

I purchased this vehicle in June with high hopes, Im over 6ft. After living with the vehicle I am sadly disappointed in its comfort. If your over I say 510 you need not apply. The seat bottom cushions are far to short to offer support for longer legs. The footwell for the driver is short on space also, making driving very uncomfortable and your only relief is when you go to cruise control on a hwy. Despite the suspect claims of good gas mileage from other reviewers the gas mileage stinks, only 18 for a 6cyl. is absurd. An Expedition gets as good. I was only getting 10 at first. Im light footed on the gas so I dont hotdog. Im looking for a new vehicle.

I traded my Edge...Im 57 even though there is head room in interior of car..the design of the door is lacking...bumped my head getting out all the time and my seat was lowered...it is the curve that is not in a good spot and passengers said the same thing...the lights are horrible..they dont seem bright enought at all...technology seems great at first but is distracting and hard to control while driving...a pain...review mirror is dimmed at night and awkward...vision issues on side of car while looking to turn...door ajar control issues with hatch...traded it in for a Sorento
