This Year's Model Updates:

A redesigned S40 was introduced halfway through the 2004 model year as a 2004.5 model. It continues into 2005 unchanged.

Pros:
  • Sharper handling than you would expect from a Volvo, T5 version offers quick acceleration, well-designed interior controls, long list of safety features, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Firm suspension can be choppy on the highway, average performance from the non-turbo engine.

  • S40T5 - great when its not in the shop - 2005 Volvo S40

I bought the S40T5 after my TSX was totaled. Its been in the shop 4 times: failed oxygen sensor, failed engine computer (requiring flatbed towing and a week-long wait for the part), check engine lights, failed fuel pump sensor, and a loose part in drivers door. Still the stereo stops working at random requiring a restart, the auto transmission shifts are so jerky in manumatic mode that I have to leave it in D, and there are rattles that the dealer refuses to acknowledge. At every service stop the local dealer service is pathetic. It is seriously fun to drive when it works, but the service is ridiculous.

  • Unexpected Surprises - 2005 Volvo S40

Great compact sports sedan, totally packed with luxurious features that makes this car a pleasant and unexpected surprise for the new driver. Nimble and precise handling, great maneuverability, awesome power and throttle response and fun to drive. Volvo has got it right this time. Not only the car excells on all safety and security features, but the box design is gone forever!! Now thats what I call thinking out of the box. The new design and platform are superb. Brakes stop on a dime. Cornering is quite sporty and inspires a safe feeling all the time. Traction control is unobtrusive, so you can also have a fun ride whatever the highway demands. Just avoid harsh terrains.

  • Fun Car - 2005 Volvo S40

This is a fun car to drive and I love the way it looks, inside and out. The mileage is bad and thats a big suprise given what Volvo says it "should" be getting. I get around 300 miles to a tank of premium gas. These days, with fuel prices what they are, that hurts....alot. I know other people with the same car that have no problems at all. Maybe its a quality control problem.

  • Better than my A4 - 2005 Volvo S40

If you going to buy an S40, go with the turbo. This model has a much better performance than the 2.41 engine. I had an 03 A4 1.8. which I traded for the S40. I have not looked back!! From quality to performance and of course safety, it beats my Audi in all categories. I first drove this car as a company car, leased 2004.5 2.4i. I recently turned it back as I had put 40,000 miles. That car had absolutely no problems. Other than the scheduled maint.

This is an awesome vehicle complete with great pickup, excellent gas mileage and an overall fun car to drive. The only complaint is the small interior space, but that is quickly forgiven after you get behind the wheel. Given its agility and lightweight, it will get up and go when necessary. I give it a 9 all day long.

  • My Favorite Car to Date!! - 2005 Volvo S40

I, like many, was looking at the BMWs, Audis, etc. But this car most surely outperformed! And is so sassy! I love it!!

Since purchasing this car, 2 months ago, it has been back to the dealership 6 for repairs on the radio. I purchased the upgraded stereo, which obviously was a mistake as it never works. When trying to change a station on the radio, after the car has been restarted, the sounds dies and the radio "locks-up". The only way to "un- lock" the radio is by shutting the car off and restarting. Volvo Corp. has been very unresponsive in my concerns about this issue. I will think twice before EVER purchasing another Volvo.
