This Year's Model Updates:

A redesigned S40 was introduced halfway through the 2004 model year as a 2004.5 model. It continues into 2005 unchanged.

Pros:
  • Sharper handling than you would expect from a Volvo, T5 version offers quick acceleration, well-designed interior controls, long list of safety features, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Firm suspension can be choppy on the highway, average performance from the non-turbo engine.

  • Love this car!!! - 2005 Volvo S40

Wow, I love this car, I got mine in September. I have one with the navigation system which is an awesome feature. I love the premium audio system. This car always makes ppl turn their head. I test drove a BWM 325i, and also the Nissian 350Z, and I simply fell in love with the Volvo. We have owned several Volvos, however I have never liked one like I do the new S40

This car is built on a ford focus platform. Driving wise its fine other than some under-steer at high speeds. The thing consistently breaks every two months, ford quality but with foreign car repair prices. The interior literally falls apart. foam in the seats and door panels melts and disintegrates in the Texas heat. Further more the all wheel drive is pretty much worthless. its so front wheel drive bias that it basically is front wheel drive.

  • Perfect Fun/Commuting Car - 2005 Volvo S40

The family car is a station wagon but I get to play every day by commuting in the T5. Exciting handling and acceleration, beautiful and unique interior, and a mind-blowing sound system (I have the upgrade Dolby Prologic II Audio package). Back seat works fine for taking the kids here and there, but wouldnt be a great family car generally (thats what wagons and minivans are for). But who cares since I am alone or with 1 passenger 95% of the time, and its mine, mine, mine. ;-) And oh yeah, its a Volvo so it couldnt be any safer.

I was in the market for a good reliable family car, and I found it! This is a very fun car to drive (with manual tranny), room enough for 4 adults, or 2 adults and 2 kids, excellent gas mileage, and the Volvo reliablility.

  • Some important issues to be aware of - 2005 Volvo S40

There is a known design defect where, if the sunroof drains that run down the doors of the car clog, water drains into the interior of the car from the lower part of the doors. Absolutely ridiculous. You need to regularly clear the drains with compressed air. My interior is ruined as a result of water damage. Also, 2005 models dont come with an auxiliary jack or bluetooth, and you cant put an aftermarket CD player in. Youre looking at around $1000 to replace the CD player at the dealership if something goes wrong. It also seems the only problems Ive had with the car required me to go to the dealership for repairs.

  • Sporty Car - 2005 Volvo S40

I bought this car because I wanted something different but sporty. Other cars I looked at was the Acura TSX and the Acura TL. In terms of power, this car seems to fit nicely between those two. It has a low pressure turbo at about 8.7 psi max. Power comes on quick when you need it. You dont not have to rev it to get usable power. Has potential for really good power with a ECU mod. I didnt notice this eariler but there are seals all round the doors, even in the area around where the hinge opens.

  • Fun! Fun! Fun! - 2005 Volvo S40

Ive always had an eye out for the S40s. I happened to purchase one the dealer bought just for show. There is nothing left out of this car, every option imaginable including the sports package. I now drive the only car like it within a 500 mile radius which makes it really unique. Great acceleration, and handling, with a mild set back that the radio might quit working and have to be turned off and back off. But its fun to pull up to a Mustang GT at a light and show em that Fords arnt the best in Texas!

  • Solid and nice looking - 2005 Volvo S40

After 4 months and 4000 miles the S40 T5(prem,clim,conv,audio,auto)is doing okay. Chose FWD to improve MPG and reliabilty. Only service is for fuel pump gasket that causes the check engine light and they always try to blame on improper gas cap application. Pending service for weak Homelink transmitter and broken lens on light below ext mirror. The computer for radio and all the program functions needs to be rebooted occasionally. The OS must be MS product! It is just the right size for my wife(short),very responsive, unique, easy to park. It is costly and MPG is disappointing.

Ive only driven 1500 miles in the weeks Ive owned it, but it is quick, good handling, comfortable, and quiet.

  • Must Have - 2005 Volvo S40

Outside of its safety features that everyone knows about, this Volvo is an exciting, powerful, and beautiful vehicle that you have to see in person to truly appreciate. You can pay alot more money for cars like the Audi A4, or the BMW 325i and not get anywhere near what this car offers. Trust me when i say that this is the time to get into this car. if you wait to long the demand for them will rise and so will the cost. Get it while the getting is good.
