This Year's Model Updates:

A redesigned S40 was introduced halfway through the 2004 model year as a 2004.5 model. It continues into 2005 unchanged.

Pros:
  • Sharper handling than you would expect from a Volvo, T5 version offers quick acceleration, well-designed interior controls, long list of safety features, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Firm suspension can be choppy on the highway, average performance from the non-turbo engine.

My wife and I are very happy with the S40. You will see the difference in comfort and handling. A Volvo S40 is much better than some of the Mercedes or Volkswagons.

  • Watch out after warranty. - 2005 Volvo S40

I bought a demo with 6000 miles. Just after the warranty ran out I had to replace the oil filter assembly. Then I had to replace the sensor that controls the valve timing. Total cost: over $1000. Software is buggy after many "upgrades" under warranty. Clock resets itself. Stereo will refuse to play, but will come back on its own the next day. Bad idea to mix the entertaiment system with the car computer. No way to add aftermarket gear - such as an iPod (use FM they say - doesnt really work well at all). Advice? Buy a Honda.

This car is nice to drive. I had a BMW 325, 2002. This car handles better to me, just like it.

  • Nice car but it has some issues - 2005 Volvo S40

I like this car quite a bit but it is not without issues. The mileage I get is terrible. Nothing close to what I expected. Around 16-17 mpg. I live in Germany and drive somewhat faster than I might in the U.S. but Im still no speed demon. The stereo gets caught in some sort of computer glitch when I start the car about 50% of the time. If I turn it off and remove the key it usually resets and works fine. Overall, I really like the car. It just needs the bugs worked out.

Wow! This car is awesome. Stylish, solid, safe & sound - welcome to the world of Volvo What more can ask of an entry-level luxury sport sedan. I feel really smart driving this car and even smarter when I spend less than $25K for it (w/automatic and gnarly standard features, and season ski pass & lift for 2 to Vail & Heavenly). It priced much less than the Audi A4 or BMW 325 and WOW its a better car in everyway.

  • Good Car - 2005 Volvo S40

Car runs great in Snow. The winter mode and traction control kept the car rather stable while driving in the first blizzard of 2006. The car has plenty get up and go for a small sedan.

  • Suprise S40 - 2005 Volvo S40

I am very pleased with the price - value ratio of the Volvo S40. The performance of the T5 is nothing short of incredible. The mileage is also a pleasant surprise. I am averaging 27.5 combined city/highway mileage on mid- level gas. This is particularily nice since I last owned a Expedition. The new style with a set of crome wheels really sets off the fire-engine red body. I would highly recommend this vehicle.

  • My First Volvo - 2005 Volvo S40

This is my first Volvo and I came to it from a Mazda Miata. I do miss the performance of the Miata, my Volvo seems a tad sluggish at times, but overall a good car. My (older) parents are able to get in and out of the car easily and the three of us can be comfortable enough. I dont have any regrets, but the Miata was more fun.

  • Sporty with safety build in - 2005 Volvo S40

The Volvo S40-T5 is a compact family car with the driving charactistics of a sports car. The adjustability of drivers seat and steering column make it even for a tail person like myself possible to be confortable in the S40- T5. Acceleration is impressive but will not set track records. The car is very sturdy built and the excellent reputation that Volvo has regarding safety was one of the factors why I bought the S40-T5. If you are like me and keep your vehicles for a long time (8-10 years)A Volvo is the car to consider.
