This Year's Model Updates:

A redesigned S40 was introduced halfway through the 2004 model year as a 2004.5 model. It continues into 2005 unchanged.

Pros:
  • Sharper handling than you would expect from a Volvo, T5 version offers quick acceleration, well-designed interior controls, long list of safety features, available all-wheel drive.
Cons:
  • Firm suspension can be choppy on the highway, average performance from the non-turbo engine.

  • Excellent Value - 2005 Volvo S40

This is our first Volvo and so far I,m very impressed, The styling, both interior and exterior is very eye catching. The safety features are second to none and while the performance of the 2.4I is nothing special it does offer adequate power and above average ride and handling. I highly recommend the heated leather seats as well as the sport package which includes 17" alloy wheels. The base single CD player is more than adequate. On the downside the interior is a little cramped for me,(602,200lbs)and the back seat would be very tight for adults. Also, our standard sized booster seats did not fit in the back seats. Volvo does offer as an accessorie a booster cushion/ backrest.

  • Great little car - 2005 Volvo S40

This was my first car; while not real fancy, it was reliable. I never had a problem with the car. Regular service, but never a major repair

  • S40 2.4i - 2005 Volvo S40

Awesome little car, fun for 2 people, 4 is definitely a crowd though, unless your friends are small. the performance of the 2.4i just isnt there, but the T5 which I test drove is a blast, the 2.4i is great fun, but if youre a serious driver, get the T5 S40 or an S60R

  • 2005 Volvo S40 T5 FWD Great and fun car! - 2005 Volvo S40

I just turned 16 and my parents bought me this car for my first car. I have had it almost a year now, and it has almost 100,000 miles on it and it is just as great as the day I drove it off the lot. It handles great on country roads, and even better on interstates which is where I usually drive. It gets a combined average 25 MPG. I use 93 octane (premium) fuel and it seems to get better gas milage. I havent had any problems out of this car! It has been a great car, and look forward to driving it for another 10 years. Just had an oil chage, new brakes, tires, and detailed, and it is good as new! I have never had any trouble out of this car! Its an amazing car!

  • Overall Satisfied with Purchase - 2005 Volvo S40

Purchased the most basic car available, which offers quite a bit of value for the price. Using the car in the city for commuting purposes. The manual transmission is smooth, like the small/compact size. Purchased the car due to its high safety rankings -- trying to protect myself from the Monster trucks that most Americans prefer today. Overall happy, however, not satisfied with the gas consumption, which is a little on the high side for a manual.

  • Good S40 - 2005 Volvo S40

It is a 2005 Volvo S40. Still feel pretty good driving it. Still has the feel of an old luxury car.

  • Good car but... - 2005 Volvo S40
    By -

Safety- big win here- got swiped by a Lexus LX trying to get into my lane- nothing but a tiny scratch. Rear ended by a Honda- the front bumper of the Honda was torn off but I only had a small scratch. Performance- no, it is not a BMW 3 series but it does 80% of what the BMW does for $10,000 less (compared with same options). Ride is a bit harsh. Reliability- flawless since I got it... until recently. Ignition switch, engine motor mount, engine speed sensor all failed at once. Parasitic draw from trunk wiring 2 months prior to that. Running costs- expensive (more on that below)

All the features, design integrity and legendary safety with none of the bling and flash.

  • S40T5 - great when its not in the shop - 2005 Volvo S40
    By -

I bought the S40T5 after my TSX was totaled. Its been in the shop 4 times: failed oxygen sensor, failed engine computer (requiring flatbed towing and a week-long wait for the part), check engine lights, failed fuel pump sensor, and a loose part in drivers door. Still the stereo stops working at random requiring a restart, the auto transmission shifts are so jerky in manumatic mode that I have to leave it in D, and there are rattles that the dealer refuses to acknowledge. At every service stop the local dealer service is pathetic. It is seriously fun to drive when it works, but the service is ridiculous.

  • Fun Car - 2005 Volvo S40
    By -

This is a fun car to drive and I love the way it looks, inside and out. The mileage is bad and thats a big suprise given what Volvo says it "should" be getting. I get around 300 miles to a tank of premium gas. These days, with fuel prices what they are, that hurts....alot. I know other people with the same car that have no problems at all. Maybe its a quality control problem.
