This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

  • Should you get a Jetta or a Civic? - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I was beginnig to think that I had made a mistake by buying this car until I saw my neighbors Civic. She had many more problems than I did... and more serious ones. I know what youre thinking: Hes not objective because he owns a Jetta. My answer to this is: I moved to a new country and again I was faced with the decision of which car to buy. After lots of research through many sources I arrived at the same conclusion: Get the Jetta before the Civic. It may be a little more expensive but you get a whole lot for that small difference.

  • ELECTRIC WINDOWS ... BAD! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I LOVE THIS CARS PERFORMANCE AND AND RIDE. HOWEVER, I HAVE HAD MORE LITTLE PROBLEMS THEN I WANT TO DEAL WITH. THE FRONT DRIVER AND PASSAGER WINDOWS HAVE HAD THE "RISER" ARM BREAK 6 TIMES TOTAL IN THE LAST YEAR. IF THE LEMON LAW WASN T SUCH A PAIN IN THE ASS I WOULD DO IT, BUT I THINK I LL JUST TRADE IT IN. SORRY TO BUM OUT ALL THE VW HEADS.

  • Little Red Fun Car - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I really love driving this car. My previous Honda Accord Coupe was a nice car, but the Jetta blows it away in terms of sheer driving smiles. I enjoy the Tiptronic transmission, because I can put it in D when Im feeling lazy, or I can row my own when I want a little sport. I must warn people that the velour seats will trap EVERY PIECE of pet hair and lint. If you can afford it, get the leather! My always-cold wife says the seat heaters will save our marriage.

  • Piece of junk - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I bought this car new in 2002 since day one it was an electrical nightmare. Air cond. stopped working first year. It took a month for the dealer to fix. It took 7 trips to the dealer and me figuring that there was a short in the telescopic steering wheel. Besides the at least 50 or so times this car has been in the shop, the best is when the timing belt snapped while backing out of a parking spot ended up costing me $3500 because it has an interference engine where all the valves get bent requiring head to be redone. There was a bulletin stating there was a problem with antifreeze leaking down the wiring harness, of course this happened to my car. Do not buy this car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great car, burns some oil - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

The Jetta 2002 Wagon is my first new car that I bought. I really like it (handling, gas consumption, design). The only problem that I ran into is its consumption of oil on my 2.0l engine. The dealership tells me it is okay to burn up to a quart every 1000miles. My car burns about half of that. This sounds more like these old two stroke East German engines. No new car should burn oil (after the first 1000miles), this is ridiculous! As a native German, I cant believe that VW is telling this to its customers here. After completing my offical oil consumption test, I will get the "1qt/1000miles" statement in writing and call Wolfsburg!

  • Love that diesel - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Have only had the car for a couple of weeks, but really like the ride and handling of it. For someone who grew up on a farm and has been around diesel powered vehicals for a while the sound of the turbo winding up from a stop light is pure music.

  • Mines been wonderful! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Im guessing that happy customers like myself have been too busy driving and enjoying instead of writing reviews. However, Im getting ready to sell my Jetta and felt a need to chime in. Most people I know who own these, love them. Mine has been wonderful, with no more problems than what I would expect from any car. The interior is very nice and the quality is overall, outstanding. The worst problem Ive had with my Jetta has been other people hitting it with their car doors while parked. The power of the 180 hp turbo is a lot of fun. The 5-speed manual transmission could be better, but its still a lot of fun (it feels "rubbery"). I am now a big VW/Audi fan and will truly miss this car!

  • Just cant get enough. :) - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

This is a more of a testimony than a review, but I would like to share anyway. The previous car I owned was the first new car I had ever purchased. When shopping, my goal was to find a fuel efficient vehicle that I could afford. So 115 horses and no frills was perfect for what I needed. In six years, your over all needs and wants from a car can all change. Now I was looking for a ride that had some zip, looked classy, was comfortable, affordable, safe, and just fun to drive. The Jetta GLS 1.8T met all these. I have only owned it for six months, but these last six months have been the most enjoyable hours on the road in my life.

  • I LOVE MY JETTA BUT IT HAD MAJOR ISSUES. - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

Had to replace drivers side windor clips because the window fell in. EPC light came on because of a faulty brake switch. Karen Radley VW in Woodbrige, VA didnt charge me for the clips because it was covered by the warrenty. I dont know which warrenty. It expired at 24K. Sometimes around 3000 RPM in 5th gear doing about 80MPH the car stalls for a second. It recently started happening. I have never driven my car like a sports car. Have babied it. This shouldnt be happening. But I guess we all have the same Jettas with the same faulty/cheap parts in them. Good luck if you buy one.

  • Excellent car, dealer needs work - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

My TDI has served me well for over 2 years. The only major problem was the coolant migration issue, which VW fixed for free under warrantee. Excellent gas (diesel) mileage, the blue interior lighting looks excelent, and I have no trouble accellerating and driving at high speeds on the Interstate.
