This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

On the highway this baby gets close to 50 mgs and has plendy of power and zip I love the firm spension and the many safety equipments (6 air bags) etc and the clean operation for a diesel. I hope the US automakers will copy VW and build quality economic cars.

When I was 18, I bought a new car to replace my 98 Ford Contour. My old car was unreliable, shameful, and boring. So for $12,500, I bought a 2002 Jetta 1.8T. This car is a perfect blend of practicality, power, class, and reliability. I get 23 mpg city/31 highway. The Turbo kicks into high gear, and gives you all the power you need . The interior? I have leather, heated seats, power windows, even a power sunroof. And now, almost 2 years later, STILL not one thing has gone wrong with it. Sure, I take good care of it, but Volkswagen has really given me a great product here. not a very big car, but extremely safe. So if you want a car that you can be proud of, for a good price, get one of these

  • Great car - auf vieder sien to fuelpumps - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

What a great car! My wife travels a the mileage is fantastic - 65 mpg(Imp)/55 mpg(US). The ride is great, steering and braking are well balanced and have excellent feel typical of German cars. Rear leg room is a bit cramped, trunk is huge for a "compact", heated seats in winter are a nice but the velour seat material is a pain. It is a magnet for lint. Unless cost is prohibitive, get the leather. The diesel drives well year round - dont listen to what pepole say about stinky, smokey, slow diesels...VWs are not. In the end, the vehicle is a joy to drive and I accept its slightly smaller interior (in the back) because VW had not put a TDI in the Passat.

  • Very Happy with used Jetta for daughter - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I just bought this fun little car after much research for my daughter. I have owned German porsches before and loved them. Although you cant compare this car to a porsche, it really is fun to drive. With six air bags, solid build, it is a very safe car for a new driver. I have read the negative posts and the positive ones. Even though there were more negative ones than positive, I chose a car that is fun to drive and is safe. It has more than ample power for a teenager or adult commuter. I did get an extended warranty, mainly because of the negative posts and the costs of German repairs. As I said, I have owned porsches so I know.

  • German performance car with SUV utility! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
    By -

I have a 2002 Jetta 1.8T Wagon with the 5-spd manual. Great car - its fast, quiet, comfortable, has an interior that looks and feels expensive, and handles well. PLUS it has the utility of a small SUV! What more could I want? Im the sort of person whose lifestyle would be well served by an SUV, but I wanted a real car with real performance and handling - this car fits the bill to a T.

  • Its all good - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Great little car. I bought it with 166000km and now have 300000km. In the 134000km/5 years of owning it Ive only had to replace the breaks, alternator (I blew the alternator by not replacing the battery when I should have), and the rear wheel bearing. The car now needs a front wheel bearing and muffler but thats not all bad for 166000km of driving. I tow large loads all the time and generally dont take care of the care of the car like I should but it still takes care of me, kow. I do change the oil every 6000km with synthetic (5w40?) and replace the oil filter with every change. I also run premium fuel.

  • Very great vehicle - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

This car has been very good to me through everything that I have put it through. Snow, heavy rain, whatever it has been, the FWD has been wonderful; I have never once gotten stuck in snow and have driven it in the mountains for 3 years now. Esthetically pleasing, and fun to drive. We have had to replace the water pump (5-6 years ago), and the front drivers door sensor, but otherwise no major repairs. The trans is having trouble, but what can you expect at 170k miles and after 13 years. The cloth on the headliner is falling off, and center console broke off, and the glove box door broke; ultimately, a great car that my family has had it, and I would consider getting another VW!
