This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

just got my 2002 1.8t ride is excellent braking awsome. Sound is outstanding, cant change cds if your thirsty i am pleased that this is my only complaint my vehicle also has to have the turn signal replaced at 300 miles??? On the positive side have you ever been in bumper to bumper traffic then seen the perfect opening in cars that would let you leave it all behind? I have and belive me there is nothing more satisfing then letting that turbo suck in air as your heart picks up then whistle it out as you realize the traffic is no longer around you and the only place you see it is in the rearview mirror. Bravo VW

After a great sales experience, my Jetta promptly started to fall apart. With only 675 miles on the car, the gas door release button fell into the door panel and the gas sensor was bad. I took it into the dealer, with it only to happen again 3 days after picking it back up with 1218 miles. Not only could I not put gas in the car (there is no manual release), I didnt know how much gas I had left! VW Cust. Service called the service dealership to where I was to be towed and they could not see me for TWO DAYS! I was stuck! Now, with only 1920 miles, the malfunction light on the dash is on signifying an engine fault. Three separate defects in under 2000 miles? Is this acceptable to VW?

  • So Unhappy With This Car!!! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

2000 Jetta GLS-worst car I have ever owned.W/in 2 months of purchase, had problems w/ gear shift, couldnt get car out of park: had to get it flatbed towed.>1 yr after purchase, brake lights remained on even w/ key out of the ignition. >1.5 yrs after purchase, engine simply died while I was driving in traffic. >2 yrs after purchase, front right window malfunctioned.Dealer said problem was so common, part was on national backorder.I asked courtesy driver from the service dept about problems hed seen:doesnt sound like VW has fixed newer yr models either. Now I received a recall notice regarding emissions and fuel efficiency.Unbelieveably, unacceptably unreliable car.Stay away at all costs!!!

  • So far, so good! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I have only had this car for a few months now, but so far I love it! Maybe VW has improved on this car since 2000? Either way, it drives smoothly, is very comfortable (even on long trips), has great power, is a good size for the amount of interior space you get (its only 4 inches longer than the sedan), and is a nice looking car - inside and out. Relatively good gas mileage on the freeway (~32 mpg), only so/so on streets (~24 mpg - typical for a V6 engine though). The manual trans. V6 wagon is the only Jetta manufactured in Germany also, so thats a plus! I definitely recommend it.
