Overview & Reviews
For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.
- Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
- More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

2002 Jetta TDI - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By TDIowner - November 6 - 2:00 amWe average about 47mpg. The best mileage was just over 60mpg and the worst being 38mpg in the summer with AC going and a lead foot. Havent had any issues with the car. We enjoy it so much we will be buying a second TDI. This car is not slow. It will hold its own. The car is very capable in city and highway driving. Our car is all stock. I have had a number of honda civics try and race us. I normally give and and race them. Havent been beaten yet. The Jetta 2.0 is very close in performance. I just wanted to show you this isnt a doggish diesel.

Go for the Turbo - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By steve9988 - October 7 - 10:00 amIve put 20k on my 1.8T wagon. It handles well around corners and in bad weather. The Turbo gives it lots of power for passing, getting up to speed, or just cruising fast on the highways. With this amount of power, its the gas mileage thats really impressive: 30mpg city, and 31.5 highway (depending on how fast youre driving). Back seats are a little tight for tall people.

Volkslemon - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By Jin Ho An - October 7 - 10:00 amIm totally disappointed with my Jetta. The engines great, Ill give them that, but I had to bring it in to the shop four times over a mere 10 month period, the window motor is busted again, and I have to bring it in once more in a couple of days. The overall performance may be commendable, but the little problems and the unprofessional attitude/skills of customer service is more than enough to give you a headache.

You want to like this car. - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By The VW Rattler - September 30 - 2:00 amAt first glance and ride the car appears solid as a rock. Tight fit and finish, well thought out design features, except for the cupholder, and a German feel. Unfortunatly the honeymoon ends soon after ownership. Numerous squeaks and rattles that you wouldnt tolerate on a 1980 Chevy. It will drive you nuts! They come from the dashboard, doors, rear seats, sun roof...everywhere it seems. The dealer claimed to fix by placing some sound dampening material in strategic locations, but to no avail. Also, lost my drivers side window to the inner door pocket and had to replace the Monsoon radio - all before 12,000 miles.

quick vw - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By Jet blk - September 8 - 10:00 amThis is a fun european auto. I have compared performance, size and features to the Mini Cooper, and I am glad I have the Jetta. As far as "bang for the buck", this car has it all. One question, why has my book value on car this plummeted in such a short time?! This is unacceptable!

Fun to drive - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By bobthony - August 27 - 2:00 amThis car is fun to drive. It handles well, acellerates well, and breaks well. It doesnt have alot of room for passengers in the back, but what do i care? Im driving :) Ive had a few problems with the car. Bad window regulator, but it was fixed promptly and under warrenty. Battery died on me just a week ago, it was covered under the warrenty. My radio stopped working for a week and started working again, but they said they would replace it anyways. All minor issues and taken care of without any money out of my pocket.

Do not buy! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By Gustopher - August 19 - 2:00 amWhen it runs, the car is great. Thats of course only on the occasional day when it isnt breaking down, the engine light coming on with sudden loss of power and stuttering acceleration, or the gas cap release falling into the abyss of the door leaving you stranded without gas. And all of this fun was in just the first 2 months we owned the car. The Ventilation system constantly whistling and doors unrelentlessly rattling and squeaking (normal by VW standards) just adds insult to injury. Nice touch, Volkswagon.

Minor Build Quality Problems, Major Fun - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta
By lynx79 - August 3 - 10:00 amLove the car, have had a few minor glitches. Both front power windows have broken off of their tracks requiring trips to the service department with less than 9000 miles on the car, both repaired under warranty at no cost, and I was told this is a problem with pre-2003 Jettas. Plastic trim around center vents has bubbled and cracked at about 8000 miles, as has the plastic on the parking brake handle, latch in armrest storage has broken, as has a passenger side floormat anchor--have yet to address these issues with service department to see warranty applicability, saving these issues for the 10,000 mile service coming up soon.
