This Year's Model Updates:

For 2002, the turbocharged four-cylinder engine receives 30 extra horsepower for a total of 180, which you can couple to a five-speed automatic with Tiptronic -- the 1.8T is now available for both sedans and wagons. In the spring of 2002, the Jetta GLX sedan's optional 12-valve 174-hp VR6 is replaced by a new 24-valve unit providing 200 ponies. A six-speed manual gearbox and the aforementioned five-speed automanual become available with the new VR6. Later on, the GLI sedan will appear -- it includes the new VR6, the six-speed and stability control without all the expensive GLX trimmings and replaces the manual-shift GLX. Other changes include the availability of the 1.9-liter turbodiesel engine for GL and GLS wagons. The base GL trim level is new to the wagon in 2002 -- previously, you had to step right up to the GLS model. A CD player is now standard on all GLS and GLX models, and all-new Volkswagen vehicles come with an improved four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, up from two years/24,000 miles. Volkswagen also offers a fully transferable limited powertrain warranty that covers five years or 60,000 miles. An on/off switch for auto-dimming rearview mirrors, a cruise control indicator light, a trunk escape handle for sedans and a new exterior color (Reflex Silver replaces Silver Arrow) complete the changes.

Pros:
  • Powerful 1.8T and VR6 engines, fuel-efficient TDI powerplant, fun to drive, comfortable ride, rich interior materials, loads of standard features, solid build quality.
Cons:
  • More expensive than most small sedans and wagons.

Transmission replaced at 800 miles, paint defect took three trips to the dealer. Sometimes it starts sometimes it doesnt. Customer service extreemly poor. I have owned the car for 2 1/2 months and it has been in the shop 30 days.

I love this car, but have been a diesel car owner since 1980; mileage is incredible; good comfort; roomy trunk; a couple of non essential electrical glitches have had to be repaired; have 100,000 mile 10 year warranty.

I have put 900 miles on in the first 4 days of ownership. First half of tank of fuel got me 47 mpgs and the second half got me 50.5 mpg. Without being broken in I cant wait. Good speed on highway needed to buy radar detector. It seems to like 75 to 85 mph. Vw dealership was easy to work with but would have been nice to see more then a couple of these great cars.

This car has cost me more money then anyother car that I have owned or what my family has owned. The 19 miles per gallon is a crock. I fill my tank up at least every five days, and I am on the average driving it only 20 miles a day. Save your mony if you think you like it. Looks dont alwasy mean eveything!

This is my third VW I have owned. These cars are well built and fun to drive. They dont use cheap material to build any components of these cars. I am currently driving the 1.8T engine manual transmission. I recomend it!.

  • Excellent MPG, excellent car - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

My primary reason for purchasing this car was its mileage ratings. I chose between this car and the 2004 Toyota Prius. Unfortunately for Toyota (and thankfully for me), I needed a new car before the new Prius was released in the United States. Currently at 65k miles, the car has required no maintenance other than the regular servicings. On long trips, I have averaged up to 60 mpg. Typically, i average around 47 mpg in regular (75% highway, 25% city) driving.

  • Buying This Car is a Bad Move - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

I have literally brought this car into the dealership eighteen times. Yes, EIGHTEEN Times. Every time I have had the vehicle in something else has gone wrong. The fan stopped working, the power windows wouldnt function, now the tranmission is failing and only at 34,000 miles.

  • STOP! - 2002 Volkswagen Jetta

Do not buy this car! My engine light is the only electronic item that works, its always on. Radio, door locks, windows headlights, only work when they want to. You almost have to bring it into the shop for everything because you need a special tool to do anything on the car. I will never buy another VW again! I wouldnt even feel comfortable giving this car to a friend.

Within the first 1 & 1/2 I had brought my Jetta in 5 xs!. Window falling into the door, 2 xs for the ignition coils, 1 x for carbon build up (which the dealership said that this shouldnt be happening so soon) once for the check engine light staying on. I still haveproblem with my keys getting stuck in the ignition for hours. I have 4 other people at work that all bought VWs within a year or two that I did... ALL OF THEM WANT TO GET RID OF THEIR VEHICLES NOW!. VW was looking into replacing or repurchasing my vehicle and after 2 MONTHS of trying to get an answer from them, they finally told me that they werent going to do anything.
